Authorities revealed Tuesday that a man carrying a loaded shotgun was arrested in January near the U.S. Capitol, and explosives left in his truck nearby went undetected for three weeks.

According to an indictment filed in District of Columbia Superior Court, Michael Gorbey, 38, of Rapidan, Virginia, faces charges of planning to set off a bomb. He also is accused of making or transporting an explosive device with the intent of using it against people or property and multiple firearms charges.

Gorbey allegedly tried to manufacture a "weapon of mass destruction, that is, an explosive device capable of causing multiple deaths or serious bodily injuries to multiple persons, or massive destruction of property," according to the indictment.

  • This isn't "the right enemy" and so this serious breach in security (at my understanding) will go completely under-reported in comparison to other foiled terrorist attacks.

If they can pin any sort of muslim/islamic/terrorist identity to him then we can expect this to be big news. But if he's a white American then I'd expect this to get brushed under the carpet. Or am I dead wrong?

  • You're completely right!!! Just another example of our lack of security right in our own country. This is incredible to me....the man who claims to be running this great nation has completely lost sight of what country he's actually suppose to be running, lol! He has terrorist and real weapons of mass destruction in his front yard and doesn't even have a clue!

  • Also recently heard reports of missile parts sent to Taiwan instead of helicopter parts. Where is the security for America? Maybe in Iraq guarding those precious barrels of oil.

  • "U.S. Capitol Police discovered the explosive device three weeks later when they returned with a search warrant to check the truck, which was in a government parking lot."

I hope they don't use this as a pretext for suspending the sixth amendment. I can hear the posturing now: "We had to wait THREE weeks until the judicial handcuffs were removed from our agents hands! In this time of crisis we need to be stripped of the legislation that keeps us from being as agile as we need to be."

I can see an attempt to make public or government owned property sixth ammendment exempt...for our own safety.

    Yeah....about that....

  • The US government (the one we pay for) spends millions upon billions on equipment to track the skies for incoming missiles while a guy in a truck gets close enough to blow a massive hole in the Capitol.
Perhaps, this thread should be in "WTF" as well.
    3 weeks earlier...
Guard 1: Shouldn't we check that truck over there?
Guard 2: Nah. It's probably one of the gardeners or something.

  • Anybody catch that article about a C.I.A. plane crash-landing in Central America last September with tons of cocaine? No joke this administration doesn't care about us or our rights... or our sovereignty, or changing our foreign policy, or blah blah blah, u get the idea.

  • To be honest, this is hilarious.
Hit us right at home. We are pretty good at hitting others' homes.
  • Wow....3 trillion dollars later and were more unsafe than we were before....

I'm starting to wonder if this Iraq war thing was such a good idea...

  • Nice sarcasm Nick.
  • Well, since we can't find explosives within a 10 mile radius of the Capitol, I can now clearly see why we had such a hard time doing the same thing in a different (blasted!) time zone halfway across the world.
    Good job, boys. Good job.

  • Maybe the D.C. cops thought Mr. Gorbey walked to the capital. With a Sword and loaded shotgun, or maybe he took the bus. Glad to see our tax dollars being spent on such a fine police farce!
    ohplease
  • It's one thing to not find any alleged WMD's in a vast foreign landscape, but a real one in your own backyard?
    tsk-tsk-tsk

  • I mean, I can understand having no suspicion of a truck sitting out on the road for a couple hours, but three weeks? Does the Capitol offer three week tours now?
  • This should suprise no one from the DC area, those security cops around the pentagon and the white house are JOKES. They are mearly police officers from local districts who have either fucked up one too many times to work in there own precinct or are on some sort of punishment.
