There is an article in the BBC about how people do so well coming from the Brit School.

Europe has shown more respect for US music history than the US has for a very long time. I can easily find re-issues by some of the least known American musicians at Belgium, Warsaw and Venice record stores. I think there's a very good reason why an artist like Dusty Springfield sang with as much heart and soul as she did. She took what was a gospel influenced R'n'B and made it okay in a more secular light based on her sensibilities fostered by her family's lifelong passion for American music, most likely beginning with Jazz. Even a, so called, "Folkie" like the late, great Sandy Denny sang with deep-seeded Soul.
The new breed of singer/songwriters are carrying on this tradition. Damn good thing, too. Keeps it from becoming sterile.
