Director Gus Van Sant put out an open call for extras to recreate Gay Freedom Day from June of 1978 for his upcoming film about Harvey Milk. I went to talk to people about what Harvey Milk represents to our community, and how the Castro has changed since the 70s.

  • Some of the noisy background interviews are distracting.
In particular, the tuba dude. Otherwise, it's a really good pod about a guy who took the biggest risks for Gay Rights and paid dearly for his actions. The comments starting at 7:19 are the best.

  • Kip, I liked this video. I'd like to have a conversation with you about "the revolution." You said you thought it was still "here." Where is here and what do you mean by revolution?

  • Good stuff. I really liked hearing what Cleve Jones had to say about the current state of the Castro and queer culture. I think it's going to be an important movie, both to remind the queer community of its roots, and to remind everyone what revolutionary times looked like. Nice work.
  • Very interesting and timely - it's a good moment to raise whether the gay community can be/wants to be revolutionary!

  • Great pod. I love San Francisco! I especially enjoyed Cleve Jones' comment on knowing the history in order to be prepared to fight. He's right though, coming out now is much easier than even 8 years ago when I did and I imagine much more taboo when he did. I'm thankful that being gay has become more mainstream. People have been more accepting of it and even trying it out for themselves. The gay community has indeed come a long way, but we also have a long way to go. There are still plenty of hate crimes and people who fear gays for no reason.

  • Pod was way too long. Too almost 3 minutes talking about a film about a guy who I've never heard of. You should get into the story much quicker. I didn't know if the pod was about being an extra in a film or about being gay, or about this guy. I didn't know what The Castro was until about 6 minutes into the video.

On the plus side, you have an interesting interview with the guy who knew the milk man. And you interviewed lots of people which is good to get different opinions.
