An interesting note in this blog: "...given that James is the first man to ever grace the cover of Vogue, the image of an angry black man might not be a good start."
Here's an NPR story with more links. -
Would you have picked any of these other alternate shots for the cover of Vogue this month?

Look, Lebron is a marvelous athlete, rich and damn good looking, if someone wants to compare him to a giant monkey I'd have to say that reeks of jealousy more than anything.

Yes, if you are looking for a racially charged message behind this photo then you will find it. Just as you can find a problem with just about anything that is shown in magazines, on TV, or anywhere else in the world. However, I honestly don't see the connection between the two in this situation. To me, this picture looks more like two friends playing around taking candid pics then a racially charged photo. I don't think it was the intention of the photographer or any person at Vogue to create a racial connotation on the cover. More likely they were trying to highlight the fact that James is a phenomenal athlete with a great sense of humor that is not always captured on sport center, but is seen on all of his other promotions (IE. his commercial). It is unfortunate that it was taken in the worst possible light and made main stream news with out taking a look at all perspectives.
