A top brain cancer expert has warned that radiation from mobile phones is causing a huge increase in brain tumours. He says that the mobile-phone related health problems could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos and he's calling on the industry to reduce radiation exposure. He based his claims on growing evidence that using a mobile phone handsets "for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer".
While some studies have claimed that there is no risk, this report explains that many cancers take more than a decade to form, accounting for the seemingly few people who were effected by radiation.

Ugh. I preferred the 2006 studies that found no links! Given the number of people who are forgoing landlines and relying exclusively on cell phones...this new report is pretty bad news. I'm also curious about the amount of time needed to cause these tumors - if you talk for an hour straight, is that worse than an hour broken up over 10 6 minute conversations? Or are we talking any level of exposure over years (because the tumors take about 10 years to develop)? Does using a headset help avoid this problem? Or make it worse by sticking a radiating device actually in your ear?! Argh!
-
just try to talk less. I'm cancelling my two year plan with Verizon this May. I'm going to buy a prepaid phone since I make about 4 calls a month.

I use a wired headset when it's easy, especially for long conversations, and keep the phone away from my body. Just in case. Not paranoid or neurotic about it, but a simple, easy precaution.

I am really so disturbed by the lack of research that goes into new technologies. Our generation is the first to have a ubiquitous presence of all these waves - coming form cell phone, satellite dishes, microwaves, laptops. WE NEED TO REGULATE THE MARKET MORE STRICTLY. I have worried about this issue with brain cancer and cell phones since they came out and find that I get headaches when I talk on them for a while.
Honestly, we need to stop valuing profit and advances in technology over everything else - public safety, health, and well being are much more important than us proving to ourselves how mighty we are because we can manipulate nature with our technology. I'm seriously concerned for the health and fate of people in my generation! -
Waitaminute....before we get ahead of ourselves let's ask the obvious question: does the Bush Admin feel there is a threat to our safety?
These guys are hyper-cautious, hyper-vigilant when it comes to protecting consumers.
Why Dick Cheney himself once said that even if there were only a 1 percent chance of a threat to the US then he had a moral obligation to act quickly and decisivley to eliminate it -- damn the consequences! Better to be safe than sorry.
Oh wait....that kind of "fatherly devotion" only kicks in if we're talking about countries with oil fields.
If there is even a 1 percent chance we could possible capture those oil fields and install a puppet dictator answerable only to the US -- THEN we must act quickly and with ovrwhelming force!
However, if there is a 1 percent chance our toys have toxic levels of lead in them and our dog food is full of poision --- eh. Who gives a shit?
Gotta love the moral clarity of the Bushies!
The only person on earth incapable of getting a brain tumor from a cell phone is George W Bush (nothing there to damage). -
96thdor, you left out the pricks and prickettes who ignore the request on the GREAT BIG SCREEN at the theater. I marvel at how important it is to these creatures that we know thay have a life by broadcasting it to everyone within earshot. It feels good to drench them with an $8 cup of Dr. Pepper on my way out.
Radiation is everywhere. The problem is that we stay too close to one of it's smaller sources for prolonged periods of time and, later, pay in permanent ways due to Motorola's (or, name your own brand's) designs.
Wow. Something else to not look forward to.
I'll take this study more seriously than past ones because enough time has elapsed to make a more thorough yearly analysis. -
huntre -- makes me pine for the days of pagers! At least then they'd have to get up and leave the theatre to make a phone call.
I don't know if I buy that using a headset is any safer. Clipping the phone to your belt would probably just increase the risk of (gulp!) colon cancer.
But whaddya gonna do? If China doesn't feel like manufacturing radation safe cell phones what options do we have? I guess (theoritically) we could -- and I know this sounds crazy -- manufacture our own cellphones with higher safety tolerances.
But that's just crazy talk. That's like saying the US has the resources or the ability to manufacture our own sneakers or clothes! -
Ugh, I agree.
Dont talk!

Nah, I just think they need to find a way to reduce radiation...
Or else we'll end up riding horses around town,
or connecting two cans and a string.....
I wonder if that really works anyhoo... -
Yes. But, only if you live across the backyard fence from each other.

I have a microwave detector. After you dial in the number, it escalates greatly when you press "talk" or "send". That's when the phone is trying to make a connection to the tower. That would also apply to texting when you "send" the text. Also the levels are greater when you are in a closed in area, such as a car, building, etc. The phone has to boost the power to reach the tower. If this is against your head at that time, the microwaves go through your brain to reach the tower. Try using the speakerphone option if no one is around and you won't disturb anyone. That way the phone is away from your body. I get so mad at my son who carries his phone in his pocket (next to his genitals) and my daughter (next to her ovaries). My understanding is that the problem is not so much when the phone is receiving but rather when it is sending. I try to get my kids to use wired earphones but I did hear there was a study that says that makes it worse. I'm just thinking the further that antenna is away from you, the better. Perhaps that is just wishful thinking.....

i'd rather someone write me a note , wrap it around a rock and catapult it through my window rather than be texted . and if anyone calls me rather than e-mail me , they better be a hot horny sheila ready to come over to my pad for some play - when i want my life to occur in "real time" then i'll go to AA and get cleaned up - until then , i'll be at the pub , and anyone i want to talk to / see will be there already or be there soon .
-
when i had a girlfriend a while back i spent a lot of time talking on my cellphone. after a while i actually felt the waves going through my brain and eventually started developing malignant looking bumps all over my skull. i realized i wasn't ready to die... so I quick popped a Bayer in my mouth that I had been keeping in my pocket. Bayer saved my life. Talk to your doctor to see if Bayer is right for you.
-
Does this mean I didn't have to go through that special agony of quitting smoking? All I had to do was give up my cell phone. I'm sure that wouldn't be near as hard! I really don't use my cell phone that much. It's pretty much for when my grown children are trying to get in contact with me. I really need to forward this to my daughter that spends most of her time on one phone or the other! I really thought she would out-grow that by now.
-
Never use your cell phone if you don't have a strong signal, as it boosts the radiation trying to bring in the signal. My 2002 VW Jetta manual said not to use a cell phone in the vehicle as it could be potentially dangerous (and not in a driving safety/road hazard way).
Aways use "Bluetooth" or speaker phone to keep the antenna farther away from your head. I wonder about WI-Fi and Bluetooth, how much research have those had. You can't go anywhere these days without being in a Wi-Fi "hot spot," including my house. Does anyone have any info on those technologies?
My friend has convinced me to not even use a radio phone at home, so I'm back on the old school corded phone. See link for more info: http://www.emf-health.com/blog/2006/03/cordless-phones-...
Cell phones should be for emergency use only and Use a corded phone at home. :-(-

Wait. You mean actual eye to eye contact conversation with less chance of lying? "Gee. I dunno, Wally..."
As for spying, there's a beam on me right now from somewhere that has nothing to do with any phones. I can't find a decent lead filled suit so, guess I'm screwed. -
The Nokia phone I have is so old it was manufactured without any preservatives, MSG or artificial colorings added. Does that mean it's safer than the new ones that take pictures?

Wow. that's kind of scary to think about since i remember my parents getting the huge case phones back in the day, then upgraded to the zach morris phone, and so on! better get checked soon :(
im glad everyone just text now! woohoo for unlimited! -
So that's why I get a headache when someone calls. I always thought it was the person calling.

Well then, and what about laptop radiation cancer, and
tv radiation cancer... does anyone know about those dangers? -
Another fact is that a cell phone actually uses your head as an antenna extension. After long conversations on the phone, the human brain actually warms to a slightly higher temperature. Has anyone's ear ever felt a little bit warm after a long talk on the phone ?

This is ridiculous...anything can kill us! If they prove that using cell phones can lead to a higher risk of cancer, do you actually think people would stop using them? We're so dependent on them.
-
All these stories about the new things that can kill you. I mean it sounds like everything in this world can kill you. As for me and cell phones the longest I talk is the occasional half hour but usually it’s shorter. Also I have my phone set for mobile e-mail so what does that do and is a Bluetooth Headset safer or what. My stance on the issue is simple until I hear the same thing from all these experts that cell phones cause damage and I mean everyone from the governments of the world to about 90% of scientists I will keep using my cell. Also what about media net on AT&T phones I would like to hear more about that. The only part of this that I have not heard much on is where is the best place to keep a cell phone on your person. The only thing that really doesn’t seem to make sense is the idea that keeping a cell phone in your pocket can cause bodily damage is contradicting and correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t a cell phone only emit radiation when it is in use but when its on and your not using it well what is it doing nothing. Also hears another thought every single electronic device emits some kind of radiation from televisions, to IPods, to the very computer your sitting at right now. We live in a world where everything can kill us. Those are my thoughts and if you find fault in what I’ve said then that’s fine because I really do hope to hear some answers to my questions. I am a very, very curious person and I love to learn so let me know what you think. P.S. Al gore thank you so much for current t.v. and this website I watch current a lot and I have learned so much from it thank you Mr. rightful president.

actualy mobile phone tech has been around since 1947. The FCC intentionaly limmited research because of the amount of signal bandwith that would be required for the technology and the unknown affects of the signals as far as disrupting other radio operated and electrical equipment and in later years fears of cancer. I always thought that was a bit too prudent, perhaps as this study suggests I was very very wrong.

haha. Yes Chet. tooo many people!

I have been reading about this issue on Mercola.com for some time. Here is a article that talks about a tiny ferrite bead that fits onto a hands-free mobile phone which can reduce harmful radition. Someone might want to look at this,
-
at first i had my doubts about this report.. so i went and followed up on the methods and statistics in the details of the information..
the study itself appears to be a retrospective analysis of multiple other studies.. it pays attention to the length of time that the patients were followed for.. as well as the correlation with which side the cell phone was regularly used on..
anyone who has studied statistics knows that numbers can be twisted to support more than one conclusion.. there is still a lot of data that needs to be looked at when it comes to this topic..
but having said that, i spent some time reading up on the doctor himself, khurana.. this guy is a certified badass.. which makes his conclusions even more difficult to ignore..
not good.. -
If a cell phone can kill you then so can cordless phones, high tension wires, computer screens, wireless routers, tvs, ipods, radios, the little bug on your window, breathing, writting, this site.....basically it is just a reason to fear absolutly nothing. a cell phone does not produce high enough amounts of radiation, and yes there are a bunch of different type of radiation not just the glowing green stuff you see on the boobtube..

I bought my TriField Meter (Gaussometer) at Real Goods, but couldn't seem to find it on their website when I looked just now.
It measures magnetic waves and can let you know how far away from a particular device the magnetic disturbance extends. It was a bit expensive, $169.00 in 2000, but well worth it, I think. jjmaster with one you would discover that you should never operate your "laptop" on your lap and that you never want to stay too close to a CFL light bulb.-

The only safe way to use a cell phone is with a headset that uses Air-Tube technology. Anyone interested in learning how to protect themselves when using their cell phone needs to take a look at this website: http://www.rfsafe.com
I use to get sores on my ears when talking on my cell phone until I purchased an Air-Tube headset and a Ferrite Bead/RFS Wire Guard to protect myself against the dangerous microwave energy that travels up the wire of a normal headset. -
this is ridiculous. I'm seriously torn over whether or not to get rid of my cell phone first thing tomorrow morning. there's no way to get around a cell phone company screwing you, so I'll just pay the bullcrap fee and quit cold turkey.

Microwave, EMF and radioactivity meters available from this site. Excellent reading is Cross Currents: The Perils of Electropollution The Promise of Electromedicine (A Startling Look at the Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation on Your Health). COVELOGIBBS: Glad to see you have a tri-field meter. Now go drive one or two of those electric cars and watch what happens! We're all going to die! I'll stick with a internal combustion auto that runs on biofuels, thank you very much!

Well, the most funny thing is that, statistically, anyone of us are more risk of being killed in a car accident or infected with a potentially deadly STD. There is no where near enough information on this topic for scientists to make a conclusion, but by no means has anyone discovered anything pointing to it causing any brain tissue damage. If you were to worry about the radiation from your cell phone, you should worry abou the following things as w
