Climate talks seek Kyoto successor

Representatives from 163 countries have opened a week of UN-led talks in Bangkok aimed at drawing up a new agreement to fight global warming to be signed next year. December's breakthrough global warming conference in Bali was the last such meeting. A key focus will be finding a solution to the conflict of interests in developing nations and emissions curbs richer nations are urging them to take up. The talks are designed to replace the 1997 Kyoto global warming pact after its first phase expires in 2012. The US was the main opponent of the Kyoto Protocol and has remained skeptical about the terms outlined at last year's Bali meeting. Somewhat frustratingly, no major decisions are likely to be made in the Bangkok talks, as they're intended mainly to establish a timetable for more rounds of talks, culminating in the signing of a new treaty at a UN climate change conference in Copenhagen at the end of next year.
