- Get paid £350 for having £67.43 worth of fun this weekend (8)
After some desperately unscientific research, we determined that £67.43 is the average amount of money we spend on having fun at the weekend. Now we’re looking for your inspiring ideas of how to spend that more creatively than on beer and takeaway.
The best 10 uploads will be picked for TV and bought for £350!
Best get planning now - deadline's April 16th!

Roller Derby is a women-only sport of fast furious skating that takes you into another dimension. Also blokes can learn the art of reffing --- it's a madhouse of sneaky strategy, jamming and blocking.
We've done this with a less than £70 so guess we're in!-

well and if you don't get picked then you are £70 in debt and f*****d over... nice try!
-
Hi Blitzdames, a man in the ring with some of those ladies is going to need to be a real toughie - really fun idea! Hope you make it - and it would be a great way to spend that money we usually spend on building a hangover for ourselves!
-
umm. would £67 buy me enough fluorescent bubble fluid to FILL the foyer @ the Tate Modern?

Chill out Ulla, it's only a bit of creative fun!
It's awesome to inspire people to make art, whether it gets picked up or not. You've had a laugh and have made a film out of it. I've wasted alot more money on a let less use over the weekend...-

It was interesting trying this challenge because you realize how many free things there are to do out there.
Anyway for £67.43 we managed to
Bet on the Grand National
Buy Petrol
Go on an inflatable slide
Play Golf
Fly a Kite
Have some chips and watch the sunset
Go skiing
Get a beer at the end and have 83 pence left!
Makes me glad I moved to the west country.
So here is a very rough edit! Enjoy. -
Brill! I'm moving to the west country.

Okay, this is what happens when you edit at 4am, you don't read the upload instructions! so apologies for the compressed video I uploaded! I'll correct that a.s.a!
-
Nice job guys!!! This is great, I'm really chuffed that you had so much fun and packed so much in. Our first entry and a cracker at that. This is definitely going to be one of our top contenders!
-
Thanks, is that right you wanted it a complete rough cut, I haven't done anything to clean it up, but can if needed.
-
Hey there - this is brilliant, I absolutely loved it! I particularly enjoyed the fact that you turned the format on its head that little bit and got 2 people to have a fun weekend...
Massive thumbs up!!! -
For under £70 we did this! Roller Derby!

Hmm, BlitzDames - would have been nice to see people undertake this activity and see how much people spent etc -- am I sniffing a little promotional activity here? Methinks so...
Looks fun though! -
Thanks Mr Costello
Considering we choose our horses by a)the crazy shirt the jockeys wearing or b)the horses crazy name, I'm not really surprised we lost that one, although you'd think if they'd gone all that way to design the guy a cool looking shirt he'd put in some extra effort to win! maybe next year I'll get the bookies advice! but even with that loss the weekend was pretty cool. -
hey, I am not against fun. What I am against is the editorial policy of superficiality in the British Current TV section.
It seems everything which isn't "feelgood" is basically censored out of the equation and the whole concept in that you have to spend a certain amount of money basically excludes underpriviliged people from the start- but maybe that's what is wanted in the first place - to make Current e.g. more attractive to advertisers if the target audience consists of people able to spend about 70 pounds a weekend, that excludes everybody on National Minimum Wage for example.
Given that Current is particularily strong in the fields of Journalism and International (most of these wonderfull ones seem to be produced via the US though) it seems absolutely inconveivable that the British section is focused on documenting apolitical, artificial, on-ignorance-bordering, unchallenging, mostly boring personal superficialities. -
Just to let you know that we've decided to buy Elmsend's pod for £350 and this will now air in our forthcoming season about escapism. Congrats!
The pod successfully shows us how they spend the money, track their expenditure and generally create a really fun narrative which is an essential part of any successful pod!
Really, really good work and keep an eye out for it on Current TV soon! -

I'd have to disagree with you when you say 'everything which isn't "feelgood" is basically censored', that just isn't the case. In fact in the recent Broadcast issue Channel 4 discuss trying to find drama that isn't drifting towards the 'miserabilist', because that has been an area they've covered a lot. Not to mention plenty of other channels. The media still believes in the age old saying that 'bad news is good news' does Ross Kemp in Afghanistan, shamless, Britz, Poppy Shakespeare, Malcolm and Barbara: Love Farewell, China's Stolen Children, Nazi Pop Twins, God Is Black, make you think 'feelgood'?
As a filmmaker it's your job to break the mold, find interesting ways to tell the story. I didn't spend £67.43 in my film because I new that more than one person could benefit from that money so I spent it on four of us, so if you work it out like that we spent an average of £16.86 each, I wanted to show how much you could achieve for £67.43 in one weekend and include your mates!
I think you can't knock something if your not willing to step up and give it a go first. If someone is on National mimimum wages and can't afford £67.43 then explain why your breaking the mold, offer a different spin on it, explain why in fact you could have a whole weekend of fun and not spend a penny!
As a filmmaker I respect those that choose to handle serious matters as I hope they'd respect the filmmakers that choose to handle the lighter stuff, it's a balancing act and I think TV is currently doing a pretty good job with it. -
Hi Ulla,
Keep an eye out for our forthcoming Future Superpowers season from the 20th -23rd from 9pm and I think you'll agree that we have a very broad range of programming coming from across the globe, not just the US.
The escapism season we have planned will be about fun and getting away from it all. Superpowers is a look at global politics. For some people Current is too political and heavy-weight whereas for others, like yourself, it is too light. I think we try to keep a balance.
Additionally, if you feel that strongly about the pods having a more political, serious leaning then maybe in addition to your uploaded pods about Square Dancing and How to Catch a Hamster, perhaps you'd like to make a pod that reflects the points you make above? Look forward, as always, to your contribution to the dialogue on current.com! -
Awesome Elmsend! It sounds like me betting on the dogs at Brighton's Greyhound stadium "seriously dude.. go for the one in Ferrari-Red" 30 quid later i wish i was colorblind.
Congrats on winning a £350. No doubt your entrepreneurial selves will spend that having a top time!-

Ulla,
Current originated in the US, so they've had more time to make interesting pods than us "superficial" Brits. Like any young company, it takes a while for young creative film makers like yourself (i'm referring particularly to the inspiring pod about how to catch a hamster) to make weighty journalistic films about about non-superficial subjects. Being a young company, i'm sure Current are still trying position themselves on the creative map and find these journalistic super brains to make films for them.
This seemingly superficial topic matter, actually uncovers a rather bold political statement that seems to have been missed on you. One doesn't need to have a lot of money to have fun, so all those people on the minimum wage (i actually earn less) could be having a lot more fun without it costing the earth. The film encourages you to look a bit further before you spend.
I would also go further to say that the current model encourages young film makers to make art/documentaries/films on a shoe string budget, just to get their point heard.
I look forward to seeing yours.-

BigRoy1965 has submitted this pod, Ticket to Ryde (see what he's done there... good work) - what do you think?
-
Anna Hearts,
I do not think that your argumentation reflects reality, because basically there have been good political uploads by Oscar Beard about water wars in Ireland and Chiapas (basically offcuts from a Channel4 Documentary because of time) and about demos in London, which haven't made it onto screen.
Now, I wonder why these were not taken on - you can not deny that his contributions are good quality and his investigative journalism is carrying, relevant and insightful. -
-
Hi Ulla
Can you send me the link to the Chiapas one? I can't find it
