A massive switch from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power plants to solar power plants could supply 69 percent of the U.S.’s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy by 2050.

A new direct-current power transmission backbone would deliver solar electricity across the country.

The energy in sunlight striking the earth for 40 minutes is equivalent to global energy consumption for a year.

  • but that means the large corporations wouldn't be making much money for 50 years. and that's just unfair, best to let them continue to exploit and deplete the resources that took millions of years to form. to paraphrase Doritos, consume all you want, we'll make more...... literally. when we are dead and rotting and waiting for life to re-evolve on the scarred and barren wasteland we leave behind.

    people are a cancer.

  • All we need is for Obama as President to say; "make it so!"

We could actually do it much faster with that good ol' American ingenuity and drive!

Let's show those old deadwood neo-cons what a waste of time, life and money it was to go after oil of all things!

  • let's hope. yes, i think Obama could make it happen.

  • chet arthur,,, there are many large corporations that focus on solar power and they are getting very rich, and their stock prices are soaring. Ever heard of FirstSolar, SunPower, Nanosolar, even in China Suntech etc... there are hundreds.

future america, solar is not free, it costs money to develop the technology to make the panels more efficienct, longer lasting, etc. And it costs money to manufacture the systems, and install them. Not only is it not free, but its short term costs not including environmental impacts is more than coal.

A 100x100 mile solar panel placed in desert would power the entire USA. Just break them up into 100 of 10x10 mile panels and we're done, and we are not causing much environmental impact.

Its more cost effective to build large solar compelxes in the dessert, than to put them on the top of a bay area home.

  • yep, thats true you don't pay money to the sun, you just pay it to the solar companies. You're right it is cheaper in the long run, but not free

  • when are we going to realize that we need to start looking at these other methods to run our lives. Living in sunny California, I'm sure the solar energy we would produce could power a good part of the US.

  • Live it up.. Pay for it now and make your home solar savvy before you won't make any money back. As of right now the electric companies pay you for the extra energy you create using solar. As of right now it's under 10k and getting cheaper to take your home off the grid...

  • We have the technology. When I was in elementary school fifteen years ago we had solar panels installed. It's just a matter of getting our priorities straight.
