There were reports coming out of Zimbabwe of negotiations going on over how Mugabe could stand down as President. They said representatives of Mr Mugabe, military chiefs and the opposition held meetings chaired by South Africa since Saturday's elections but
the opposition have now denied that a deal has been reached.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change says it won Saturday's general elections, but results have been slow to emerge, they are now expected to wait until Wednesday to declare their results.
Under the proposed deal, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai would be declared the winner of the presidential race after Mr Mugabe had stepped down.

The New York Times has a really interesting op-ed profile of Mugabe that paints a picture unlike what I expected to hear of him.

'No deal' for Mugabe to leaveI heard a really good report on NPR by a woman who got to interview Mugabe twice (he never grants interviews) and she basically said that he doesn't really have a realistic comprehension of his role in Zimbabwe's future. Time for democratic elections.

watch this comment being used hereWhy should this man be given a 'deal' to leave??? If he lost get him out of there and give the people of Zimbabwe a chance!

What's happening with these elections is preposterous. Every time I hear more news from Zimbabwe I'm actually incredulous at how the situation over there has come to this point. How much are we to blame and what kind of a future does the country have even if the opposition are duly in power? The country's in a real state...

I'm sure if necessary he'll be given a retirement sanctuary somewhere warm and luxurious like South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Florida... like all the great genocidal dictators - Idi Amin, Pinochet, Noriega. I wouldn't be too worried if I were him.
-
Does the deal grant him immunity from prosecution of his past crimes? Let's hope not...
