Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese has to been signed up to direct the Bob Marley biopic, which is set for release in 2010.
According to BBC 6Music, the film will follow Scorsese's other music documentaries 'Shine A Light' and 'No Direction Home'.
The film is based on Rita Marley's memoirs of life with her husband and is being produced by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
There has been speculation that Lauryn Hill will play Marley's wife. The real question is, who will play Marley?

Fantastic. can't wait.
I nominate Mekhi Pfeiffer
..even though he looks nothing like Bob...he does wear dreads well and has the whole stoner vibe down. -
Michael Franti should play Marley, or at least one of his sons!

Rita Marley, who says she will be actively involved with shooting on the film, told the Reporter that her grandson Stefan is the ''splitting image'' of Bob and would be perfect to play him in the biopic.

Marty's on a music kick... Check out the reviews of "Shine a Light", his Rolling Stones concert film out this week.

This should be cool ! I love Scorsese

If anyone could do Bob Marley's story justice it is Martin Scorsese. He is probably the most compelling film maker of our time.
-
He makes the best films, he makes the best films! If I ever meet him, I gonna grab his neck and just shake him, and say thank you, thank you for making such excellent movies!

I fail to see why this film will be interesting. Marley is not a good musician, and many yuong people fail to recognize his greatest achivements, which lie in his political breakthroughs.

Marleys specific musical skills (Or lack there of) are irrelevant to it being a good movie. Knowing Scorsese work, you will get a detailed slice of Marleys life, challenges, music, political accomplishments, challenges etc. The man led a very interesting life, and as you said had impact on more that just music.
Its not like Bob Marley was a Musical Virtuoso, and the move is going to focus on that. -
My ears are bleeding! Did you say he wasn't a good musician? His political achievements are because of his music. Anybody till this day, can here a Marley song and know, it's a Marley song. His music transcends cultures and time. We'll know his music 50 years from now and it will sound as timeless as it does now. No one wants to here someone screeching about poverty and injustice. You first have to get the people to listen and he did it through his music. It's like saying Dr. King wasn't that great of an orator, all he did was win a nobel peace prize. He was and is his music.
-
Just to clarify, I'm not saying he wasn't a great musician (My reference to him, i.e "Lack there of") was more in context of the previous posters comment. Who knows (Or cares) how good a musician he was.
I love his music and in general don't judge what constitutes great music, great musicians/etc. To me, if you like what it sounds like, its great (To you). Music is way too subjective for anyone to say something is great, or not great. -

I'm surprised you intend to give young people a lesson. I need a hammer to hammer you down!!
Bob's greatest achievements had nothing to do with political breakthroughs. He was a rastaman, his was a different fight, I'm not even going to attempt educating you. Go listen to more Bob.
"The greatest warrior that ever wielded a guitar in defense of a race", soothed, educated, enchanted many and whose message still lives. Infact your babylon negativity just made my day, because Marley sounds so goo-oo-o-od right now.
Kudos Scorsese. Get a native to play him, beats a forced Jamaican accent anytime. -
Well described - politics generally means, deceiving to progress your greedy motives. So if by "political breakthrough" you meant teaching brotherly love I'm willing to overlook your ignorance.
One love. -
Bob Marley's whole life was about helping people to emancipate their minds from mental slavery; whether that was through music or his life and actions.
-
I'm so glad scorsese's doing this. everytime I hear about a new music biopic I'm afraid it'll be another ray or walk the line (great movies... but practically the same). i doubt that'll happen this time around.

Marley chose natural cancer treatment. I hope they put some emphasis on that in the movie. My understanding is that it's illegal in the US to opt out of chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments. I personally would prefer a natural death to radiation/chemo torture. The US needs to expand it's understanding of people's rights. You shouldn't have to leave the country to get the treatment you want.

now i have a reason to stop preparing for the impending mayan doomsday prediction and have some last bit of fun.
horrible -
people have to understand rasta culture to fully get bob. he was a great man, and lived as a rasta from beginning to ending. on some levels i can appreciate the rasta culture as much as i can't relate to it. sort of like my baptist wife understanding Islam. hahahaha. its a fine line. but the works define the man, not just his faith. and his work is a testament to what man can be when he tries to be the best he can possibly be.

So boring. These music biopic are all the same. Poor and modest poor back ground, uncoltivated talent, rise to stardom, decline or new hope or death.
All the same from La vie en rose to great balls of fire through walk the line, ray and what's love got to do with it.
Boring boring boring. And who cares? They are so predictable (because eventually everybody more or less already knows the story) that when you try to get out of this formula like I'm not there the result is pretentious, pompous and eventually uncomprehensible.
Scorsese should retire. -
The description to this story is a little off.
From what I've been reading in the trade papers and even in the linked article is there will be two separate films. Scorsese is just doing a documentary about Bob Marley so no one will be playing Marley in this film.
The Weinstein's do have the rights to a biography written by Rita Marley and are trying to produce biopic but they aren't producing Scorsese's documentary. They were talking about getting one of his sons to play him but the Marley family won't sign over music rights just yet and a Bob Marley movie without his music would just plain suck so it's kind of on the back burner right now.-
