Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s on Non-Violent Struggle for Peace and Justice

In his Nobel Peace Laureate's Acceptance Speech, Dr. King spoke of both the immorality and impracticality of choosing the path of violence rather than the non-violent struggle for justice he advocated and practiced with courage and passion. His words ring out today to those who thirst for peace with justice with the same urgency with which we heard them then when soldiers were killing and dying in Viet Nam and another immoral President was waging an unjust war for oil.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said, "Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. I am not unmindful of the fact that violence often brings about momentary results. Nations have frequently won their independence in battle. But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers."

  • With all due respect, the Vietnam war was a legacy transferred to Johnson from Eisenhower, et al... Our next president gets to reap what has been sown also... And the beat goes on...

  • Which President was waging the immoral war is not the issue.
The immorality and utter impracticality of war as a solution for conflict or differences is what must be understood.
Unless in self-defense, violence is never the answer.
And most people who've had to resort to violence in self-defense will tell you they felt it diminished them to be violent, no matter how necessary it was for survival.

Dr. King wrote, "Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers."

  • 3rd world, 2nd world, even first world Gov. has been lost to the people and yet it is said the Truth shall set you free.

Women and children all over the war are dealing with violence and have no one to defend them. Someone should and in my view we should lead the way via the UN.

Human rights abuse must not be allowed at any level.

It is possible to lead through a strong defense without needing to ever fire a shot. You simply must speak the truth and everyone must know you speak the truth.

Sadly that has not been the case. It is the LIES that have made us weak. That may soon end.

It should be WE THE PEOPLE. NOT WE THE CORPORATIONS. This does not mean all people in corporations are bad. It does not mean all corporations are bad, it simply means they should have no control over this countries voting process.

Those who profit from ongoing conflict however have their own issues to deal with to be sure.

It is possible to divide nations into states with different points of view and still keep that nation whole. Security will always be JOB 1.

Without PEACE and SECURITY very little is possible.

  • Well said.
Reading the entire text of Dr. King's speech, gives an an depth analysis of the reasons non-violence is the most effective path towards justice over the long run.

There can be no lasting peace without justice.

Real security can only be attained when people worldwide have access to basic human needs like food, shelter and water.

That's why the UN's Millenium goals should be adopted, worked for and implemented worldwide.

    United Nations Secretary-General

"We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals – worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries – but only if we break with business as usual.
We cannot win overnight. Success will require sustained action across the entire decade between now and the deadline. It takes time to train the teachers, nurses and engineers; to build the roads, schools and hospitals; to grow the small and large businesses able to create the jobs and income needed. So we must start now. And we must more than double global development assistance over the next few years. Nothing less will help to achieve
    the Goals."

  • These words are timeless and should be heeded as a warning to our current activites as well as our everyday lives.

Violence is never the answer to solve any problem.

  • It goes back even further than Nam.
Research George H.W. Bush's two grandfathers and their funding $1 million to Hitler and the Nazi's that took them from losing seats in the German government, then gaining a majority within a year and Bush's grandfathers' part in the Silesian steel company in Poland.
The third partner who gave the $million to Hitler, a Brit, was convicted at Nuremberg and went to prison. The Bush grandparents were forced to give back some of the profits they made dealing with the Nazis, but kept enough to keep the dynasty going.
The Bush family and war instigation and profiteering have a long history. Suspect, if you went back further, you might find their hand in other wars too.

  • Someone pointed out on another thread that the UN Millenium goals can't be achieved unless we stop the WB/IMF - World Bank /International Monetary Fund from forcing developing countries worldwide to privatize water and electric companies, health care systems, resources, food provision, education....

So-called developed countries are discovering almost too late that privatizing and centralization of water, food and energy causes big problems like global warming and decentralization is the direction we need to go. Why the push to get developing countries on this regressive path? Money and Power.

Paul Wolfowitz, the neo-con whose lies helped build the false case for the Iraq War was moved to head the World Bank. After the girlfriend scandal, Wolfowitz moved on to the American Enterprise Institute and wants to influence policy looking to Africa and Indonesia.

Wolfowitz is replaced at World Bank by Bob Zoellick.

    Who is running IMF now?

  • Wow... very informative... thanks for the history lesson, et al... No doubt that the Bushites have always been pushing the war machine for profit... Why then with the trillions of debt that we have, do the American voters keep on enlisting their services?

96thdayofrage, some of your comments really open up my thinking.

Bush's grandfather Prescott Bush funded I.G.Farben, a company that built the concentration camps and also brought Nazis over here after the war to be infiltrated into the "CIA." His assets were also seized under the Trading With The Enemies Act during FDR's administration. So yes, this has been going on for quite some time.

And as for the World Bank, they are insidious in giving loans to developing countries in order to take or privtize their water resources under the guise of helping them with stipulations to those loans that could never be met. Look up "vulture funds" to get a better understanding of what the World Bank and IMF are really all about.
