Millions of kids flock to Facebook and MySpace

Ever felt like your much-loved social networking sites are dumbing down and becoming swamped with fit-inducing flashing pictures and frivolous rubbish?

It could be because children under 11 are signing up to sites like Facebook, MySpace and Bebo in their millions.

Research in the UK into internet use by media regulator Ofcom has found that more than a quarter of 8 to 11-year-olds claimed to have a profile page on a social networking page, despite the sites apparently doing their best to discourage pre-teen use.

There are social networking sites specifically aimed at kids yet a huge number of young children are attracted by the popularity of sites like MySpace, who says users much be at least 14 to register, and Facebook and Bebo, who set an age limit of 13.

  • This is a video concerning MySpace addictions. It's horrible. Horribly funny that is.

    Poor kid.

  • forbidden fruit is sweet... When you tell someone not to do something that's when they are tempted to try it out. I know that's how it feels for those younger kids. I used to be a rebel when my parents forbid me to do some stuff that little kids weren't suppose to do.

Maybe these kids should just be supervised and parents have access to see what their kids are doing online.

  • Devo64 I have seen that video and I always wondered if it was true. That is a bit of an extreme example though because I have never met a kid that could call upon its demonic powers so easily.

  • Devo64 I Watched the video and come to think it's probably fake. though I would not be surprised to find the video real,I do know that my younger sister at age 9 is already more obsessed with Myspace than I ever have been with the entire Internet.

  • Its amazing how a social network craze can encapsulate millions of people to join very quickly. Take Bebo: within a few years it topped MySpace in the no. of users. Now Bebo has become out of fashion, Facebook is the next contender to be the most popular social networking site.

Friends follow friends, who follow the flood.

  • Darku, I personally think the video of Facebook kid is real. There are quite a few high strung people out there, like Halo 2 boy.

  • I hate when kids use slang online, bothers the heck out of me. And I hate when they type 'LyKE tHiiS && liikE diis" and think it's cool. I learned my lesson a long time ago, it's not cute or clever.

i love kids, but i hate seeing them "online now".

    Carlos, I hope not either.
