Do you have any idea why we vote on Tuesdays? Neither do any of the presidential candidates.

"In 1845 Congress fixed the day for voting for presidential electors as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November."
Why?
"In those agrarian times, getting to and from often-distant polling places was a two-day proposition for many voters.
Weekend or Monday voting was out because it would have required travel on Sunday, a problem for those who observed the Christian Sabbath. Hence Tuesday, the first convenient day of the week.
They didn't simply make it the first Tuesday of November because every seven years it would fall on Nov. 1--not only All Saints' Day, but also the day of the month merchants traditionally reserved for balancing their books and taking inventory.
Why November? Because it comes after the autumn harvest and before the storms of winter that made transportation difficult, important considerations for Americans of the mid-19th Century." -
Nice work. Great interviews on an important subject.

Great job! Very impressive that you were able to talk with so many candidates.

Great pod! I definetly agree we need to revolutionize the way we vote. I went to Belize in Central America, and one person told me he was ashamed that in a recent election only around 80 pecent of the people voted, and he considered that very low. If we could get close to that figure it would be amazing.

Hey, Constantine changed the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday. Surely, we can move the days for voting.
-
This is a great subject...I think we need to either change the voting day or make 2 voting days...so more people would be able to make it to the polls. Only having one day, and that day being on Tuesday, a middle of the week work day, we are missing a lot of votes. Great Subject!

feedback: i dont have time to do my laundry on saturdays let alone vote.
in san francisco early voting allows me to mail in my ballot with several weeks to review the voter's guide and actually make an informed decision instead of just making a judgement call based on a last name or a few lines of print on the ballot.
has anyone seen any evidence that americans not turning out to vote has anything to do with tuesdays vs apathy of government or some other reason? -
In Oregon we vote by mail, it is very convenient.
