At least Obama has the good sense to get qualified people in his cabinet
-
Politicians will do anything to suck up to someone to get an endorsement. Mr. Gore said he had his phone off the hook when he gave his interview for 60 minutes. I say, good for him, he should keep it there. He has far surpassed the petty rhetoric of Washington DC. And oh, yes, "we talk all of the time"... What a player. Mr. Corn Ethanol. Mr. Nuclear. I would hope he would NEVER consider a cabinet level position or a VP spot with ANY ONE of them. I also believe he stated on Larry King that he would not accept a cabinet level position. So, Obama thinks he will pick Mr. Gore's brain and take credit for it like he does in the Senate? I hope Mr. Gore stays far away from it all. If anything, Mr. Gore should be the next Secretary General of the UN, but there is no way he is below Barack Obama.
Oh, and it was wrong of Obama to even bring Mr. Gore's name into this when he is now launching an important ad campaign that is NOT partisan and this station is going puiblic. It is too soon for him OR Hillary Clinton to even talk about cabinet positions since the primaries are not over and there have been no nominations. He is just trying to win votes, and I find it to be sneaky and backhanded to use Mr. Gore's name to do it.-

Ditto, agreement on all of that JanforGore! At least now though Obama has committed to some green activity publically...
-
I think it's good that Obama wants to bring Gore into the discussion. It would be stupid NOT to consult Gore concerning the climate crisis.

Well, yes, more words... He's been in Congress and already voted for the 2005 energy bill that gave more to nuclear and corn ethanol. He's going to have to do more to then make me believe the words coming out of his mouth when they aren't in concert with his actions. When he calls for a carbon freeze, no new coal plants, a carbon tax ( I honestly don't really care for cap and trade because it can be abused) and 90% GHG emission reductions by 2020 to 2030, I will believe he isn't just saying this now as well to get votes. And actually, that goes for all of them.

Well then certainly having Gore at his side may help him make better decisions in the future.

Consulting, fine. Using his name before the next contest in Pennnsylvania as he has to fish for votes, arrogant. And Mr. Gore started this discussion and has been in it... where have the rest of them been?

I'm not sure how Gore will respond if what was reportedly said on Larry King applies.
But I think that Obama's apparent willingness to listen to Gore's ideas and let him have a hand in shaping policies is a lot better sign than what has been happening where there is rampant opposition to them.
I'm sure that Gore would factor in the politics of trying to votes from it since he's had to deal with that situation from being a politician himself.
Still it's a step in the right direction at least. -
If Gore wants to be neutral, which he has until now, he'll say something to the effect of 'I'll be happy to consult with whoever becomes President.'
but refusing to get involved with politicians would be silly. I don't think he would do that.-

Well, let's face it, Mr. Gore is more highly respected now than ever... all of the candidates realize that if he were interested in running he would win! So, to drop his name out there next to your own is primo... The only problem is..."He's Al Gore and he did not authorize this message!" Hello... I'm quite sure that he mentioned talking with Hillary also during this election process... cheapcheapcheap tricks... However, as a patriot... He will be voting along with the rest of us for someone... hahahee!
-
yea, he probably made that statement realizing that Hillary would not/could not do the same. He must have brought it out to show that he's on better standing with the Goracle than Billary.

janforgore,
jan I would have to agree with you, it is not right at this time to be pulling Vice President Al Gore into this. I would hope that of course he would support Hillary, when the time is right.
He did deal with the President Bill Clinton and helped to correct the economy and he dealt with First Lady Hillary, well at least Second Lady Tipper Gore did.
I and my family was very disappointed when Bush stole Florida from from Al Gore that was wrong in every sense of the word.

Not right to pull Al Gore into this???
This is politics. And what has Gore said all along? He wants to see the political will. Well, here it is folks.
-
most of you are to young to even know what I'm talking about.
When I say Bush stole Florida from from Al Gore. And if the votes do not get counted in this election it will happen again except we will be letting it happen to our own party this time and the republicans started it this time also.
And we would have let them get away with it again!
Come People Vote to Have all the Votes Counted!

Jan for Gore, I don't know how defining your policy by allying yourself with real figures like Al Gore is sneaky. Right now the candidates are both defining their policies, and he said the word "commitment" outright. That's something everyone is going to hold him to. Sneaky politicians don't generally make commitments. He's fighting for the presidency, and in a week where people actually had the nerve to start talking about Gore for president. Sneaky would be if Gore got the nomination at this point.
-
He is looking for his superdelegate vote. Simple as that.

I read what Barack Obama said about Al Gore and I didn't find it out of line. He was trying to grab Al Gore's base, Americans who care about this country and the environment.
I personally don't think Barack Obama will have a chance with the media we have today. It's a long time between now and November, much can change! They control the spin. If they could spin war hero's into less qualified than a draft dodger, they will make mince meat out of Barack Obama.
Mainstream media has an agenda. Right now they are quite happy with their current spin, race and gender against each other. Divide and conquer! They are spinning a divide in the Democratic party now and they will swiftboat the winner later! All they have to do is start spinning fear, America will vote for the 'old white guy'. Sad as it is, that was their plan when they didn't cover the other Democratic candidates. They chose our candidates in their coverage and spin. Race and gender! Divide and conquer! -
Exactly Rage. Saying he's looking for super delegate votes is stating the obvious. Isn't that what both candidates are hoping to secure because it's an election? Adding "Simple as that" . . . kind of indicates that's the only reason he has anything to do with Al Gore. It's kind of assuming that the rest of us can respect the man and need his counsel, but it couldn't possibly be the case for Obama? Based on what?
"At a town-hall meeting, Obama was asked if he would tap the former vice president for his Cabinet to handle global warming.
And, what Obama said was . . .
"I would," Obama said. "Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years from now."
He didn't offer him a VP spot, or assume he would take a cabinet position but in answer to the way the question was put, he was just graciously saying he would be welcome in any capacity instrumental in consulting on global warming - - and who better for God's sake. We can assume and make up all kinds of scenarios about his motivation but you can't argue with his solution to the global warming problem. I doubt with Gore consulting us on the issue of global warming that any fears of ethanol or nuclear solutions wouldn't be put to rest and alternative, realistic solutions put in place.

96thdayofrage, keep the faith! Anyone over another four years of George W.'s policies.
Any Presidential candidate crazy enough to sing; Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran, shouldn't be our leader!
We are Americans, hear us roar, we don't need no more war! WE NEED TO PROMOTE DIPLOMACY, NOT BOMBS! -
Jan, I get the feeling you have no faith in anyone but Gore. you know, Obama IS a good guy.

As everyone came to find out was the case with Al Gore, contrary to many negative opinions.

I would not cast aspersions on Obama about his motivations. He is a smart man to enlist Gore.
Skepticism is good nevertheless.-

I think he made the statement because he was asked a question.
Politics over the past few years has made us all skeptical to some extent - hell, when you're kept in the dark and fed bs long enough it's a given. On the other hand I'd rather not give up all hope that some out there are honest. -
spunkycarol: Thank you. I question why his name was mentioned today of all days when it is obvious his superdelegate vote is being touted as the most valuable. It is almost as if he is trying to put him on the spot. And how many here are now talking about Mr. Gore's ad campaign through The Alliance? I have seen at least eight entries on this, but none on that with nearly the same response. It is as if that campaign was not even launched. Do people really care?
If you care about addressing climate change you put forth a platform that actually mirrors Mr. Gore's plan, not just use his name to get press for yourself. Sorry, but I too have been around long enough to not just fall for everything that a politician does or says, especially after the last eight years. When his plan coincides with Al Gore's I will then believe he is sincere about addressing this crisis. And again, that goes for all of them.-

Obama was not using Gore to get press for himself. He was answering a question posed to him about Gore. Obama talks to Gore and consults him for advice and wisdom in refining his policies. Considering Gore isn't running for president, this is the next best thing, a president who stays in close communication with him. I'd caution you not to throw out the baby with the bath water.
And I would suggest you dont look at the last 8 years of Bush admin to determine whether or not Obama is lying to you. I understand what it means to be embittered, but Obama is not a Bush.-

He was asked a question. He answered it. Watch the video.
All this talk about why Obama would choose to evoke Gore's name is nonsense given the FACT that he was asked the question.
Some people keep bring that up...and some people keep ignoring it. I'm beginning to wonder why.
Great points as usual rage.
