It’s release day, and a lot is changing on Current.com. Are you uninspired by the way news is reported these days? So are we, and we’re looking to do something about it with Current:News – an hourly open source newscast aimed at redefining the way news is reported.

How does it work? It’s simple. You already contribute news stories, blog posts, and videos to Current.com from all over the web. We toss these contributions into our algorithmic soup along with the votes and comments from the rest of the community, and the most popular items make it onto our newly redesigned homepage.

From there, our community continues to vote on the popular items in a race against the clock. Our new homepage features a voting section for items that are in the running, a countdown timer letting you know when the next item will be selected, and you’ll find the most recent Current:News pod and the stories it features at the top of the page. So, if something you posted makes it onto the homepage be sure to rally your connections to vote on it.

Participation in Current:News is open to everyone in our community, and since Current staff is a part of the community, the chances for staff contributions to make it onto the homepage (and ultimately get picked for TV) are very real. We're not going to lie to you. It's going to happen. But that doesn't mean we determine everything that makes it into a News pod.

In an effort to be open about our activity within the community, we've decided to make our staff badges more visible. Ultimately, there are more of you than there are us, so consider this a challenge. Tell us what is most interesting, popular, and relevant, and do it in a timely fashion.

Alongside the launch of Current:News, we are also rolling out the first phase of our user incentives program. There are three different tracks you can level up on:

1. Contributor (Orange): Post news stories, videos, and blog posts on Current.com and get noticed for your contributions.

2. Commentator (Blue): Post responses and vote on items to level up as a commentator. Each day you visit Current.com you have the chance to earn one commentator kudo by voting or commenting five times (in any combination).

3. Producer (Pink): Upload a VC2 or VCAM video and level up as a producer on Current.com.

You’ll notice badges next to everyone’s avatars on Current.com. As you level up, your badge will illuminate with a color indicating your level in each track. Make it to level two and we’ll send you some sweet Current gear. Don’t worry, we’ve been keeping track of activity since the launch of Current.com, which means many of you may already be at level two and beyond.

So, I’ve rambled a bit, but there was a lot of ground to cover. If you haven’t already, jump into the fray and start participating. Who knows, you might make it onto TV by the end of the day.

Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

  • Oh my gosh, news we can use! Current.com has been fun for me. I don't go into chat rooms, but I love to post on current.com.

I posted on Sunday and it has gotten over 1,000 hits. I was so excited. People need an outlet. What better place than spreading the news.

Sounds like a movement to me! American needs a movement, we need to get ordinary Americans involved in making change and stop mainstream media from feeding us shit!

  • my head spins. I think this is good? Lots of work went into these changes! At a glance it looks like more participation will actually have a real effect on this place. That is great if true. When we get a chance we will look more closely. Real life around us has just gone a bit insane. But what is life if not insane? I bet you Current staffers are all ready for a long nap.

  • Bring back the hits counter. I like seeing how many people have hit on the posts I post and the ones I view. It's my gauge for number of people looking at various issues.

Just an opinion. The new current.com is great!

Also, what does the numbers in the comment section on the profile page mean?

    Example: 88884482

  • Thank you, thank you and one more thank you for the road. You've got us users in the front of your minds and that's a very cool thing indeed.

  • @Conniepae -- thanks for the feedback. Each item page should still have a views counter in the upper right corner.

Also, the numbers you're seeing aren't supposed to be there, and we're working on a fix for this. It's as if the fingernails on our code have grown too long, and need to be clipped.

  • This is an awesome idea, as well as innovative. Now people like me, who have always dreamed of a reliable news source, can establish a credible and opinionated system of international news OURSELVES!

I seriously believe that this type of news will catch on as the future of responsible reporting.

THANK YOU CURRENT FOR DELIVERING THE NEWS BACK INTO THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE!

  • Very nice move!

  • I do think Current News is made up too much of static pictures and not film/video - not using the TV medium to its full. The treatment of news is a bit too superficial for me editorial treatment also invites less investigative research or soft news.
I do miss a timeline on the blog contributions - e.g. older news should be taken off blog/voting when news value expires. Also very US based, too, so far.
I miss user contributions in video format.

  • Our country is so messed up and news teams aren't doig their part cause they are generally scared of their bosses. It's like the airline inspectors. They are scared to report that Southwest planes have cracks because the government regulators threaten their families.
We young people need to fight corruption at all levels thru the media. We need to communicate that fast food companies are making us obese and sick for their own gain. Factory farming is feeding these fast food outlets with cows, pigs and chickens that bare tortured, skinned aline and bred without ever being treated humanely. All part of the money grubbing country we have created--no humanity or morals.

  • The quickest way to stop those corrupt fast food companies from making us obese and feeding fast food outlet chains with tortured animals is to stop consuming those products. One thing about freedom....you don't have to eat fast food. If you do eat fast food, you are part of the problem. That really has nothing to do with the media. That current can make it easier for people to educate themselves via easy access to info is the plus. It isn't even corporate medias job to educate people. Their job is to make money, as is the case with any corporation. It is each individuals responsibility to educate themselves..and thanks to current for bringing the info to our fingertips.

  • @ulla -- thanks for the feedback. We are working on getting more video into Current:News pods. One easy way is to post webcam responses to items.

So, next time you see a topic worth responding to, give the keyboard a rest and fire up the webcam. Dazzle us with your insights and you might find your webcam in an upcoming Current:News pod.

  • I've got 2 videos I've uploaded on this site (current TV) - How can I get them rated and on TV. I'm HIV+ (for over 20 years and healthy but on meds) I'm an artist in Orlando Florida, and I think everyone that was recently diagnosed or knows someone that is HIV+ or AIDS. should "Live their life as best as they can - Live is SO short". I't's sort of my goal on my creations/videos. View the videos, and decide give me a great grade and put the on TV. Finally. Peace the WORLD needs MORE of it and Thanks.Artist, durkART http://durkART.com
