Beauty in death

These hypnotic portraits were taken before and after their subjects died, and are shown alongside thoughtful interviews with many of those they feature in their final days, ranging from a baby of 17 months to a man of 83. You can check out the full collection at the link. The work, entitled 'Life before death', is by German photographer Walter Schels and his partner Beate Lakotta, and shows at the Wellcome Collection (opposite Euston Square tube) from April 9-May 18. The exhibition highlights for many how little we face up to death in 'Western' society.

  • Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. At first, I was a bit apprehensive to click on the link but everyone was photographed very nicely as they lay in their eternal rest.

Some people seemed angry about death and others at peace. It was really interesting, not just the photos, but the stories along with it.

  • Life Before Death is the most beautiful portrait series I have ever seen.

We truly are too removed from death...

  • Did anyone notice the intense suffering in the faces of those afflicted with death? My mother used to say that unforgiveness will give you cancer. I try to forgive as quickly as I can and not harbor any resentments. Perhaps this is why I have survived for more than 30 years with HIV.

  • Beautiful in a way we don't often get to experience. Haunting but necessary.
  • That was some experience, especially with Dead Can Dance (Nierika) playing as I read. Eyes are a bit wet now.

  • This is truly amazing. Too often people shy away from the topic of death for fears of their own eventual passing, but this exhibit was able to show the beauty in death and life. The excerpts that accompanied the photos had ringing truth to them that made me reflect on my own life and the eventuality of my passing.

  • I'm not going to pretend I don't find this disturbing, but it is undeniably brilliant.
