Surgeons removed a patients inflamed appendix through her vagina, "a first in the United States."

"The procedure, called Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), involves passing surgical instruments through a natural orifice, such as the mouth or vagina, to remove a diseased organ such as an appendix or gallbladder. Only one incision is made through the belly button for the purpose of inserting a two millimeter camera into the abdominal cavity so the surgeons can safely access the surgical site."

Wow...This is amazing.

  • I would say that title is a wee bit misleading (what's an appendix doing in someone's vagina?!). However, still very interesting. I wonder if going through a natural orifice is safer, or better overall for the patient.

  • Noted...and apparently it is safer and better overall for the patient.

"Removal of diseased organs through the body’s natural openings offers patients a rapid recovery, minimal pain, and no scarring."

  • Ah, thank you, it probably would have helped if I had read the full article, but that is very interesting.

  • As a woman, I would rather have a big nasty scar than have a diseased organ pushed through my vagina.

    But that's just me.

  • While I can't imagine that surgery would be pleasant, I can see how it would be better than traditional abdominal surgery. When I had my appendix out, I couldn't sit up straight for a week because of the surgery. The scar isn't exactly pretty, either.

  • Wow, now a tonsillectomy would have been REALLY impressive '-)

  • Vagina is a very delicate area- I am with you peenkeefeenger - nothing diseased should pass through that. Plus I don't think t hat is the purpose of a vagina, it just sounds kinda wrong - no matter how amazing it is.

I would definitely rather have the scar.

  • so do you think sex is only for procreation?

oh, please! I'm sure you don't even feel it, or aren't aware when it happens.

I would sooo much rather take that out of me through a canal i already have instead of having to carve one through my skin and muscle.

"rapid recovery, minimal pain, and no scarring"
    that's what i'm talkin bout.... :)

  • big deal - I have a friend who had his spleen removed via a urinary catheter!
  • how big was her vagina to be able to get your hands (both of them) in there and cut around and successfully find, and remove and sew back up in there?

i mean if it was that big? her tampons must be huge!

  • The don't use their hands through the vagina - special instruments and technIques are used. This is very similar to laproscopic surgery. Badda-bing.

  • If it gets us closer to "painless surgery" I'm all for it!

  • I bet they can't pull my appendix out of a vagina.

  • I would keep it in a jar of alcohol in my foyer, or atop the fireplace.

But really, discomforting location aside, it's a great technique, and a great choice to have if you're a woman who needs to have her appendix removed.

  • Wow! I didn't even think that would be possible! But I guess, like they said, it wasn't too bad...this should definitely be a House or Grey's Anatomy episode soon.
