'Airline terror plotters planned bigger 9/11'

Amazing how no one cares about what would've been mass carnage on an incredible scale. Americans never seem to know anything about attacks that were thwarted. Failure of the imagination. And an inability to comprehend those who hate us.

Obama would bend over for these guys and their brethren as he dismantles the measures which enabled these maniacs to be caught.

I feel like a lot of people feel like this is just another thing to keep us in fear.

Well, I do at least.

If we're not even allowed to carry water bottles, or shampoo on an airplane, I have a feeling that a bunch of guys with weird components either on their person, or in their luggage would get foiled even if we didn't catch them before hand.

I'd always been annoyed at not being able to take liquids on a plane. After hearing the details of this case however, I'm happy to go along with this rule if it means nutjobs like these guys have one more obstacle between them and their dastardly plans.

I'm wondering what the defense has to say. So far the article is only reporting the prosecutor's statements, which aren't proven to be the truth.

Was i the only one that kinda got a McGuyver feeling while reading how the alleged bombs were to be made?

I'm with you Yonie...has anyone seen any official responses from the US gov't. What is being done with all of our "Anti-terrorism" money to prevent things like this from happening.

Things like 9/11 just can't happen again, though other countries see horrible things everyday, I am not sure Americans can handle another attack like that and if it did happen, they may all loose it, could be some pretty big uproar in this country, that's for sure! What do you guys think!?

They used an Oasis drink bottle to store the main explosive material, colored it red with food colouring to make it still look just like the juice.

They were going to connect the normal looking items together, just like a well planned bomb, to blow up, right there, in the centre of the plane's passenger seats.

Pretty shocking how that could have been pulled off really.

I personally think this is an issue worth thinking and knowing about.

To those of you who think the new seaches aren't woth it, I'll remind you the terrible 9/11 plotters could've been avoided, the high-jackers were'nt searched, would you belive. Just with the ordanary pistols and knifes, they werre on, just due to not being searched, as the security staff's job should've been.

While I don't doubt their plans, it is a lot more easy to plan for things than it is to carry them out. As such, I have to agree with the scaremongering other people have mentioned.

For instance, I plan on protesting the war in Iraq by riding Godzilla through Washington, while five thousand creepy French mimes follow us to the White House.

What if we just didn't allow carry-on baggage?

Then you wouldn't need to x-ray all that crap and there would be no physical way to "assemble" a explosive device out of various items you brought on board with you.

Seems to make sense to me.

Check ALL baggage -- where it all could all be sniffed by bomb sniffing dogs, opened, spot checked, inspected, etc.

Also the luggage would be placed in "bomb proof" containers underneath the plan making it impossible to bring a plan down in mid-air -- unless they packed a suitcase with 25 pounds of C4. But then we go back to the bomb sniffing dogs and behind the scenes spot checking.

All of that sound like a more rational/productive/effective response to the 9/11 hijacking then what we're doing now.

As opposed to suspending all civil liberties, building GitMo, randomly rounding up Iraqi citizens turned over for bounty to US soliders, held for years without charge, invading Iraq and spending 3 trillion dollars and killing 4,000 (and counting) soliders and crippling tens of thousands more, etc, etc, etc.

9/11 (we tend to forget) was basically just a airline hijacking done with $10 in box cutters.

Installing locks on the cockpit doors would have totally 100 percent prevented any plans from being hijacked and crashed into buildings.

Some people think spending $3 trillion in Iraq was a "smarter" investment than just spending $12.00 installing a lock on a cockpit door. I would question that.

The President often claims that if he had been given the dictatorial powers he now has prior to 9/11 -- then it never would have happened.

Bullshit.

A simplier solution would have been to just require all cockpit doors to have locks! Simplier in comparison to the Patriot Act, GitMo, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, ect.

We need to think smarter as opposed to working harder.

But I don't reckon they'll have any of that happen. Especially not taking your luggage, you would'nt seem likely to have kept anything by a large chance, so many passengers with possetions and all.

As long as a motive remains to commit these atrocities against innocent people, terrorism will always find a way to do the unthinkable.

True story: I actually made several flights last year with a razor sharp box cutter in my carry-on. I only discovered this after reaching my hotel.

onechance -- yeah, I have my doubts about 9/11 too. I've watched all the versions of "Loose Change" and just based on what the Generals were planning during the Kennedy Administration (to commit terror acts here and then blame them on Cuba as justification for invasion) is enough to make me think that it's certainly possible. I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

But we need to focus on the future. Bush and his cronies will be gone soon. Going forward the next administration needs to re-think our entire national defense strategy. Spending $3 trillion to solve a $10 problem is the current "strategy" Bush is applying to ALL our national problems (hence the staggering debt and lack of tangible results). We need clear-headed, intelligent, common sense leadership.

I also think there needs to be some kind of focus on re-educating (or deprogramming?) our fellow citizens who have drunk the Bush Kool-aid and confuse violence with results.

Let's assume for a moment 9/11 really was just a routine airplane hijacking. Hijackings had happened many times before (heck, even DB Cooper was a hijacking!) True 9/11 was different in that the hijackers flew it into a building and the casualities were higher -- but it was still just an airplane hijacking.

Planes had been hijacked before and we never granted the sitting President dictatorial powers on par with Saddam, nor did we build GitMo, nor did we suspend the Constituion, nor did we reclassify the Geneva Convention as "optional."

Instead of treating this incident has a failure of airport security and a failure to put locks on cockpit doors -- Bush (in cullsion with the media) was able to morph this unfortunate (but fairly routine event) into mass hysteria. Suddenly an airplane hijacking (several hijackings) became an act of "war" that demanded a full scale military invasion of TWO countries. Subtle!

Airplane hijackings will be attempted again. Car bombs will go off again at some point in the next 25 years. Shit will happen -- but we can't get fooled again into believing that a dictator is the answer, or that invading China is the answer, or that mass carpet-bombing Iran will magically make us safe forever and ever.

What scares me is that I see a lot of people who got so terrified after 9/11 that they now think anything less than a hyper-violent overreaction is the same as being a "pussy." They see Bush randomly blowing shit up and they think "Whew! I'm safe now!" They see clearheaded, rational Obama explaning that randomly blowing shit up in Iraq doesn't actually make us any safer here at home and these people get angry, get scared and start calling Obama a "pussy." And Hillary cynically plays off that irrational fear some people have! She has her little "3AM" ads and suggests subtely that if we elect Obama, oh no, everyone weknow will die because he doesn't have the "guts" to kill our enemies and drink blood from their skulls.

We need to get beyond that kind of mindset.
