The Big Apple has a new logo, and Apple says: Drop dead.
At issue is the emblem for New York City's GreeNYC campaign, which has started to appear around the city on bus shelters, hybrid gasoline-electric taxicabs and even Whole Foods shopping bags.
"The city believes that Apple's claims have no merit and that no consumer is likely to be confused," says Gerald Singleton, the intellectual-property lawyer representing the Big Apple. "This well-known city is using its new design in a variety of contexts that have absolutely nothing to do with Apple Inc."

From a PR perspective, Apple Inc. should leave NY's green apple campaign alone. Our goals are all the same here, promote a greener way of living. Consumers may perceive Apple Inc. as anti-green even if they are not.
-
How does Apple think they can win this one? The logo is an apple, but it is very different from the Mac version. I don't think Apple has even a remote chance to win this battle.

For a company that's been lagging on their greening efforts and facing some bad PR as a result, this just makes them look even more like a greedy corporation vs. an innovative company
Bad apple. Bad.-

Apple Inc. is bordering on megalomania. How arrogant to think that you own the apple symbol outright. Would Apple Inc. challenge Adam and Eve for the apple in the garden? What a joke.
-
In a way it would've(if they didn't bitch earlier) been good publicity, would it not? Apple Inc. should stop being a sour apple, and leave cities alone.
-
NYC was the Big Apple way before Apple inc was the Big Apple they think they are.
-
I see absolutely no resemblance from the Apple logo to the GreeNYC logo, oh, other than it's the same fruit. This is ridiculous and it's bad publicity for Apple. We should all be working together for a greener earth.
-
If you look at the pic from engadget you see how it could look the same and apple haven't sought legal action yet, so nothing may happen.

I think we are comparing apples to oranges here... or maybe lemons... (You should see the sour look I have).
Another corporate entity run amok... are we all ready for some serious changes in corporate sprawl yet? -
Why all the fighting over Apples...As long as they look differently and are distinct over one another; why argue over something as dumb. Apple is a HUGE company that makes a TON of money out of NYC and NYC will always be known as the big apple. Neither one is going to give so someone better suck it up and get over it!

Didn't the Beatles use the apple as a symbol way before Apple did?

Apparently Apple doesn't want to be associated with anything 'green'.
-
I don't see why Apple would be upset. Infinity on the other hand should be pissed!

HAHA!!! being open source myself...i've always thought macs were like the telephones with giant buttons for the handicapped or elderly...lmao...sort of a computing with training wheels =P...but wtf do i know...
and as an onsite tech...the saying goes...an apple a day keeps the bill collectors away! lmao
just keep doin what your doin apple...
-
i'm reminded of Disney .
-
I agree with Scott, I think NYC's logo looks much more like the Infinity logo than Apple's logo. Is Apple going to start suing grocers for advertising their produce with a drawing instead of a photograph?

Crazy mac cultists strike again!

I'm a mac cultist, and even I think this is retarded.
-
this is just sad...
an organization attempting to spread environmental awareness and all apple can think is
"hmm that looks "just" like our logo..."
whats gonna happen... greenNYC is going to steal all Apple's profits?
wait... didn't they mention its a non-profit organization? -
This is absurd. First of all, Apple computer doesn't have copyrights over the shape of a fruit. I'm an Apple user, and an apple eater. I'm also a graphic designer, and I find it silly that they would claim this design copies their own.
