This pod details the use of the emerging technology known as Convolution. In game audio and music production, impulses are captured from real world places and gear, and can then be used as effects. Imagine being able to record a vocal track in your closet, and then have it sound like it was recorded in a real Cathedral, all by the use of one effect unit.

Recorded at Electronic Arts in Redwood City, Marielle Jakobsons is a sound designer for the Sims. She recollects on her experiences with Convolution, and how this emerging technology is shaping the way we interact with audio, both as engineers, and as gamers.

  • I loved this pod for several reasons. a) It features a female sound designer (I'm always on the lookout for positive role models for my grandchildren.)
    b) It explains an esoteric term c) that is used in one of my all time favorite games: the Sims.
    d) it is well made.

  • Thanks Ana!

I think that women are an underused resource in the industry, and the ideas/demonstrations she gave us were fantastic.

I'll be producing more of these, the next one detailing ways to capture Impulse Responses of rooms or gear that have that 'certain unique sound'.

    Best,

  • I feel like this pod is one long commercial for EA Games. The b-roll wasn't suitable. I didn't understand the screenshots at all. The samples were dull and needed v/o to guide them.

Overall I still think it needs a lot of work, and it shifts out of focus in and out of the interview.

  • Thanks for the input Gamedev-

    I'll take it into consideration.

It wasn't a 'commercial' at all though, sorry you felt that way, though I don't understand why you do.
