to criminal activity but in geek circles it's a term of endearment.

Great point! I guess the term 'sexual assault' irritates me when it's used as a sanitized word for 'rape' in the meeja...

the terms you mention start out as benign but the media turns them into slogans. The scary part my friend...is that "hacker" is already becoming synonymous with their new favorite slogan..."terrorist".
Oh sorry...their catchy twist to the slogan is actually..."cyber-terrorist" so the term "hacker" is now a moot point isn't it?
So yes...based on the information you reveal in this pod with your harmless "hacks"...you are a "cyber-terrorist" and I would be shocked if confessing like this doesn't bite you in the ass in some way.

Kevin you are not a Hacker, you are just someone who can surf the net to find `hacks`someone else has came up with
There are thousands of these sites on the net,it really is a zero brainer to unlock an iphone (first search on google)but the hacker is the person who wrote the code that unlocks the iphone.which takes over 5 minutes to write to the phone.
the term you discribe is often confused with `Cracker` who are normaly the real `criminals`
or the original phone phreakers (but looking at you kevin, you would be far too young to remember them)the other purpose (and working for the guardian)would be to draw people like me out in to the open to learn more,as the real hacks are not on the internet (Topup TV,Sky Digital,Phone top up algorithms,Etc)
The media distort the real truth,i sugest you look for a hollywood film called `Takedown`,and look to the real truth on the `2600` website, this is how the media distort things

John,
You're right. I'm not really a hacker in the way you describe, but I wouldn't say that I'm a 'script kiddie' either. Yes, I find things that other people have done and adapt them, but usually that only gets me part of the way there. And there are plenty of things that I do that are beyond the grasp of most computer users. But yeah, at the end of the day, I'm just a savvy user, and I know that.
But I'm not content to let the designer of the hardware or software decide how I will use it. If I see something that could be used for a problem I need to solve, I am ready and able to adapt it. However, some of the things I have done, I would rather not talk about, seeing as it's basically me against my own IT departments. Corporate IT: What would you like, security or being able to do your job? Pick one.
No, it's not zero-day exploit or unlocking the iPhone, but you and I both know that much of hacking is about not only knowing the system but knowing human nature. Kevin Mitnick did about as much social engineering as he did 'hacking'. At any rate, I digress.
If you want to get in touch. It's easy enough to find me.
best,
Kevin-
