Looming above Peña Boulevard greeting travellers and commuters heading towards Denver International Airport is a large azure blue horse rearing in the air with fiery red eyes. This 32-foot tall cast fiberglass sculpture created by the late New Mexico artist Luis Jiménez was installed February 11, 2008, as part of DIA's original public art commissions from 1993. Jiménez' Mustang / Mesteño was completed and installed posthumously after he died painting the horse sculpture's head. It is the largest sculpture in the artists' career, and its installation last month closes the final chapter of its tumultuous 16-year history.
