Girls as young as 9 and 10 are getting highlights and other salon treatments (like relaxing or perms). That young? Crazy. What happened to doing your own hair with your friends and a bottle of Manic Panic dye and hoping your mother didn't kill you when you got home?

  • Well, it must be the parents paying for this crap, so I blame them.

  • i agree, CHUNCHE..

my niece has been getting her hair highlighted since she was about 8.. there's nothing i can say or do, cos she's not my kid. but, i've let her, her mother, and my brother know that i believe she is waaaaay too young for that. they don't seem to care.

and, what's even worse when it comes to my niece is that her mother says she is going to put her on the pill soon (she's only 12) so that she doesn't get pregnant. yes, my brother's gf got pregnant young.. at 16. i guess she doesn't want her daughter to end up the same.. buuuut, what's happened to just TALKING to your kids these days??

    oh, but, i digress....

  • I remember my mom perming my bangs when I was about 12 or 13... yikes that was scary! As long as its the kids idea, this seems cool to me. Lets just hope it doesn't get to young, like piercing your infants ears a month out of the womb, why do people do that?

  • This all reminds me of "little miss sunshine", I think one problem with this is that parents are letting their daughters get caught up in the idea that they need to improve upon their looks, and it starts with hair and makeup, but, I hate to use the "slippery slope" argument here, it could lead to girls wanting plastic surgery. Parents should encourage their daughters to stay away from too much of this by letting them know how beautiful they are without it. My parents were strict with me when it came to makeup, but i'm actually glad they were because i'm happy with my looks now and i can go out in public without really worrying about makeup.

  • i agree that that's a bit too young. I feel like it's more of the parents choice though. Parents need to learn to set boundaries.

  • i agree. my mother is a hairstylist and she never let me get highlights or dye my hair until i was now! i still almost never wear makeup and I'm not self conscious about it either. i think making girls 10-11 years old get their hair colored or get their brows done is making them think their looks aren't good enough.
