Warren Jeffs's Polygamist compound near Eldorado,Texas is being served with warrants today as a hundred young women are being bussed away by Child Protective Services.
"Authorities have sealed off the 1,900-acre compound near Eldorado and no one is allowed to enter or leave, officials with Child Protective Services and the Department of Public Safety said."
Jeffs was convicted of two counts of assisted rape last year. His followers consider him the "prophet" of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
Upadate: "Authorities say they removed 52 children, ages 6 months to 17 years, from a West Texas ranch occupied by followers of imprisoned polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.
Texas authorties stand in front of a bus they used to transport children from a FLDS compound Friday.
Eighteen girls have been placed in the temporary custody of the state under a court order, said Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner. "

Are they going to include this in the new season of Big Love?

Good. It's about time. I hope Jeffs gets multiple "husbands" while in federal prison! *chuckle* It'll serve him right!

Schleicher County Attorney Raymond Loomis Jr. said a girl apparently called authorities to complain, but he had no other details. They took away a bus full of children - mostly girls.
I'm glad local authorities are doing something about this fundamentalist group. Cries for help need to be taken seriously. -
I don't think polygamy should be illegal, but obviously consent laws should be enforced.
-
Not only that, but child abuse laws! Studies have shown that polygamists of religious sects only marry underaged girls. This should make any parent angry that pedophiles are still allowed to go under the guise of religion to do their dirty business. Child abuse is child abuse. Religion is no excuse.

I think it goes without saying that child abuse is wrong.

what? no mighty display of domestic military power like with Waco? I'm a little disappointed with this administration in that it didn't end in a fiery mess. I mean come on...Reno under Clinton would've burned that place to the ground! Goes to show how feeble mormons are i guess...but...he probably knows that with todays "justice system", he won't be in jail long...especially with that kind of money...looks to be a pretty plush compound by "compound" standards.
Did i read that right? sentenced to 10yrs in november on 2 counts of RAPE and they are just now picking him up at his plush ranch? Uh yea...he won't be in jail long...how pathetic -
it was a nice looking spread though - mormons know how to build a den of iniquity , i'll give them that - that place makes some of the ski lodges i've stayed in look like motel 6's .

We'll only get something like that if we elect Hillary. Dumya and the Family Values inbred are actually a little disappointed we caught Jeffs.-

can't ya just hear all those skeletons rattling in the closets? WHy is it always these hyper-religious types that always have the dirtiest, darkest secrets?
-
I usually try to be open minded towards polygamy as just another life choice that isn't inherently wrong...
but things like this are what give polygamy such a bad name and why people continue to attack it. The whole story is disturbing to say the least.-

This isn't a new issue by any means, polygamist abuses made it into president Garfield's inaugural adress. btw that's a surprisingly incredible speech that has been mostly lost to the rumbin since his death in it he promises an end to segregation, the building of the Panama Canal, and talks about the importance of literacy and the seperation of Church and State. The sad thing is people were ready to listen! And he was killed by a random crazed man who had asked to be ambasador to France and when he was refused shot the president.

Another cult of personality bites the dust.

I am not so convinced that the government can do much better for these girls. Studies show that a child put into government foster care is far more likely to receive abuse of all kinds. And that is when they are in foster care, regardless of what their experience was beforehand.
I am not defending Jeffs and his cult but I trust the bloated federal and state bureaucracies about as far as I can throw them. I do not know what the solution is, but taking away people's private property surely is not the answer and I will wait to see if the seize it indefinitely or not. -
just for show. Jeff knows somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody and they're probably all customers.disgusting to think about but really...a ranch?! 52 minor females removed? reports of rape and abuse?? and these girls havent seen the outside world? how else would they build such a lovely home? selling girl scout cookies maybe?

how unfortunate... do polygamists normally recruit unwilling minors? ...this is the first I've ever heard of it. this could be reflecting unfairly on "legitimate" polygamists, as eagleman1 definitely alludes...not that I subscribe to the lifestyle myself; but you wonder, what's up with the seizure? why not just arrest 'em as they would anyone else? for the drastic call to action like that, you get this vision they were actually humping away on the couches when the feds walked in... you might expect better when the pigs are already spying on Americans to begin with. I also suspect there is a dark lord somewhere we do not see.
anyway, I also have a hunch the vast majority of the people "attacking" polygamy, per se, the ones who'd "NEVER" subscribe to it (what shall we call them? poly'phobes ala homophobes? hehe) are probably all the outraged "women" who dearly subscribe to having the monopoly on "their" man =P lol ...i could be wrong, but then again...ala billy joel...I could be right =D -
Comimg from the UK I'am amazed at the level these organisations get to run without being stoped or investigated by the law. Remember WACO and the Jonestown deaths.
I saw a group of teenage girls and boy's from the Warren Jeff's community on a newscast earlier today and I was proper weirded out, they all looked really like him.
He's the type of spinless guy to run straight into the segrigation unit of the prision he is being kept in in Utah.
It's all about power, George Bush has probably got a few undercover wives tucked away. -
This migh sound really lame, but Opera did a really good piece on this issue.

I was trying to think of something else to say to the Mormons who show up at my door every week. Like, trying to find something different about what they believe, and here is one of those main things. The Mormons have had alot of awkward rituals and beliefs from Joseph Smith, at least from what I can see. Until 1970, they excluded blacks. Also their book says somewhere that green men lived on the moon way BC. And the idea that they all will populate another planet in the afterlife (Polygamy to the max)

The Government comes in and kidnaps 137 kids from their parents. Wow! Talk about abuse. I hope every single one of those children wanted to be hauled off in government buses.
And what the hell does Warren Jeffs have to do with the Mormons. Do your homework people. Quit being the intolerant mormonphobes that you are. -
Tell me whats fun about living in a town that has armed guards patroling and locked gates, to keep people out or more to the point is it to keep people in.
You want to wait till it's too late and some of those kids are married off at the age of eleven cos some guy says it's ok. -
well "doing some homework" =D
...I've learned a lot...like the fact Mormonism has disavowed polygamy since the 1800's already (don't drag them into this!) and Jeffs was some self-described prophet from the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (FDLS). Elissa Walls is the woman bringing suit against Jeffs for a union with her first cousin she didn't agree to when she was only 14.
there's a very interesting lot more on Elissa Walls at http://www.childbrides.org/elissa.html which provides links with even more detail like:
"said she begged her husband not to touch her as he undressed her one night soon after their wedding.
"I can't do this, please don't,'" she said she told her husband. "I was sobbing. My whole entire body was shaking I was so scared. He didn't stop. He just laid me onto the bed and had sex.
Afterward, the woman said she felt dirty and took two bottles of painkillers. "I just wanted to die. I didn't want to deal with (my husband) anymore. I didn't want to deal with Warren, or the prophet, or my mother. ... I was so hurt by them," she said." ( http://www.childbrides.org/elissa_reuters_Warren_told_E... )
and how Steed (Elissa's first cousin in her "marriage" by Jeffs) admitted "that a few days or weeks earlier he had exposed his genitals one night in a park.
"In my own clumsy way, I tried to make her feel more comfortable to help move things along (sexually)," he said." Of course Elissa was pretty pissed off about a lot of that bs about how she supposedly initiated the sex. ( http://www.childbrides.org/elissa_VS_Allen_said_Elissa_... )
was interesting to read how the sect believes Jeffs was/is a direct descendant of Christ, and also how Jeffs had tried to hang himself while in jail... twisted stuff... -
the lds cult strikes again
