  • yay! I hope he picks Edwards for that post!
  • John Edwards would be great, he comes from a mill workers family background like me, but I bet Hillary will look at Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congressman John Lewis who've been working on the Out of Poverty Caucus and with Martin Luther King III and the Realizing the Dream Poverty in America Initiative. Edwards, Gore, Nader, LaDuke and every leader committed to healing our earth and our relationships with each other and other countries.

  • Hillary's actions over 35 years prove she cares deeply and has worked to alleviate poverty. Her tax records show she's backed that concern with her personal money. Her work in the Senate proves her commitment to ending poverty. Name-calling, especially sexist slurs like "blue-rinsed", diminish you and don't change the facts. They shouldn't distract by the historic proposal Hillary Clinton made today to name a cabinet level Poverty Czar who she would ask everyday, "What have you done to end poverty today." She is probably the first presidential candidate to ever call to an "end of poverty as we know it." Lest people think this is pollyanna thinking, remember what Martin Luther King III says, "We do not lack the means to end poverty, we lack the will." Nearly 40 million Americans living in poverty must stop and I'm grateful for Hillary Clinton for addressing it as one of our most pressing problems upon which our quest for peace and prosperity with justice depends. Once we focus the will to end poverty, there is nothing we can't do. In the richest country in the world, no child should go hungry.

  • This is nothing more than ANOTHER attempt by Hellery to copy Barack Obama. She has been a johnny come lately to almost every position which Obama was first on.

Barack Obama has had a plan for a cabinet level department on poverty since the beginning of his campaign. Even Edwards did not have such a thing, and certainly Hellery didn't. This position has been on Obama's website in his blueprint for change since day one of this campaign. Leave it to Hellery to co-opt from someone else and try to claim it as her own idea.

Anywho, back in December there was an extensive comparison of Obama, Hellery, and Edward's economic and poverty plans, and Obama got the highest marks with specific mention of his initiative to establish this cabinet level department on poverty. here is the link and an excerpt:

Of the three Democratic frontrunners, Obama’s is the only site providing specific attention to urban poverty. A seven page document posted on the website entitled “Changing the Odds for Urban America,” states that Obama would take “addressing urban America seriously” and would create a White House Office on Urban Policy. While not a blueprint, the document does address key urban issues including addressing the need for programs to “make jobs pay ” and to expand efforts to provide childcare, public transit, housing and urban reinvestment.

Does this woman have even ONE decent original idea? sheesh!

  • mystistagirl with all due respect is misinformed.

Hillary Clinton has put forth most of the good ideas on the democratic side in this primary and Barack Obama has mostly taken her platform and said many times that he agrees with Hillary Clinton on most issues. eg. ending the Iraq War, universal health care, solving the credit crisis, greening the economy, etc.
Barack lets Hillary form the issues, come up with the good ideas, then tells us he'd do a better job doing what she articulated and proposed first.
Obama has not introduced one innovative or progressive proposal to the American people during this process, except to keep saying he'll do a better job with the ideas Hillary already proposed. We need a president who has solutions and can come up with their own proposals to end the war and poverty as we know it. We need a critical thinker who can act on her feet and come up with her own words to inspire the American people, not just cut and paste from the inspiring speeches of past leaders like Obama has.
Obama is not the candidate who cares or will do something about poverty. Why do you think Edwards was endorsed by Martin Luther King III? Because his position on poverty was the most articulated at the time.
Hilary's policies on poverty, her decision to appoint a poverty czar to the cabinet and her decades of work and bringing government and private sector attention and money into poor communities is closest to Edwards' and our goals of eradicating poverty, which she understands will uplift all Americans.
Resorting to name calling "Hellery" doesn't change the fact that in every way, Hillary Clinton has done more for the poor, is the only remaining candidate who has called for a movement and a cabinet level post to end poverty and who understands, cares about, and has repeatedly proven her commitment to the concerns of poor, working class and struggling middle class Americans. That's why ethnic working class women, Hispanics and many African American women and men overwhelmingly support Hillary, while white liberal males support Obama, who's got their back.

  • I truly hope we can finally see a concentration on eradicating poverty in this country. It is all too often pushed under the rug. And yes, Martin Luther King III's endorsement of John Edwards was very telling. And while I am really not in Hillary Clinton's camp either, I do think a position to deal just with the poverty issue in America is a good idea. If it comes to pass I would hope that John Edwards would be willing to take it on.
