A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m (£1.3m) - after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994.
Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction.
"It's crazy, it's just crazy," Mr Clark, who lives in North Potomac, Maryland, was quoted as saying by the Baltimore Sun newspaper.
"It will make a significant difference in my life, for sure," he added.

Why didn't I think of that! Awww man :(

Wow, I can't believe people are getting this much money for a word they purchased! Are there any words/phrases left that haven't been purchased?
-
This is ABSURD! Someone had too much money to spend in the first place, lol.

What an investment..in an internet web address... :?
-
The thing is that it was from an online bidder, most likely on EBay... and it is not as if that site has not become prone to fake bidding these days. Lets see the story when he actually receives a chick and it clears, or it is made public who made the purchase

God Bless America!

Investing $280 since 94' and getting back 2.6 Mil is a hell of a flip
-
What a sure bet. Beats banking on lottery with those atrocious odds. All the best to the lucky bugger. Hope he utilities it positively especially in this global climate of credit crunch.

It's not absurd whatsoever. It's business. You know how much traffic the domain name must get even if there had just been a placeholder up for the site to begin with?
Now if this anonymous bidder is with Pizza Hut or Dominos Pizza or Papa Johns or another national / semi national pizza chain, it's a coup as it raises the brands profile even further -- they own the most generalized domain name for what they sell. Teh domain name alone coudl become the name brand for the franchise.

thats one of the coolest things ever good job lol
-
american dream = doing little and making more. this guy single handedly rewrote that concept. i applaud you sir.
-
A friend of mine sat on his ass all day long selling mistyped domain name hits to their real intended sites and made millions. He basically would buy domain names like Monwy.com and sell the traffic to the actual site, Money.com. The internet is a gold mine for people with big brains. The rest of us still have to work.

I think this guy is my real American hero. But really though, the BBC report should reflect that it's just a measly 1.3 million quid. Bullocks!
-
interesting, I also applaud him, very smart business move indeed!
