"The Chinese central government has for more than 700 years exercised sovereignty over Tibet, and Tibet has never been an independent country. Archives in Beijing, Nanjing and Lhasa containing several million records in Chinese, Tibetan and Manchu substantiate the historical facts of these 700 years. These historical documents and objects fully prove that Tibet is an inseparable part of China's territory. The issue of "Tibet independence" did not appear until the breakout of the Opium War of 1840, which marked the onset of imperialist invasion of China in modern times. At the root of the erroneous concept of "Tibet independence" is the foreign imperialist invasion of China.
After the Opium War, China was gradually reduced to the status of a semi-colony. China having been invaded by imperialists, Tibet could hardly avoid the same fate, and in 1888 and 1904 the British imperialism twice invaded Tibet, and forced the Qing government to sign humiliating treaties. It occupied large tracts of land in outer Tibet, and made Yadong, Gyangze and Garyarsa trading cities. These invaders met brave resistance from the patriotic administrator, ordinary people and troops of Tibet, and aroused the ire and condemnation of the Chinese people of various ethnic groups. The British imperialism subsequently changed their tactics, resorting to all manner of gimmicks, treachery and enticements to Tibet's upper classes, with the aim of building up pro-imperialist forces through which to partition Tibet. They trid to separate Tibet from China, and make it a vassal of British colony.
In 1910, the 13th Dalai Lama went into exile in India, thereby making it easy for British imperialists to force him to their will. After the 1911 Revolution, the British escorted the 13th Dalai Lama back to Tibet, and in 1913, after careful plotting, the British imperialists convened the Simla Conference in India. At this conference, Britain proposed the divisions of "Inner Tibet" and "Outer Tibet", aiming to control Tibet in its entirety, while gradually nibbling at the Tibetan areas in Sichuan and other provinces. British representatives made a secret agreement with those of Tibet, behind the Chinese representatives' back, drawing the so-called "McMahon Line" in an attempt to capture a large stretch of Chinese territory in return for British support of "Tibet independence." This plot was strongly opposed by the Chinese government.
Britain subsequently provoked discord between the Dalai and the Panchen, forcing the 9th Panchen to go into exile in the interior areas. Britain also donated large quantities of weapons and ammunition to Tibet, and instigated the eastward incursion of Tibetan troops with the aim of establishing the "Great Tibet State." In order to put Tibet under its complete control, Britain also induced up-and-coming generals, headed by Carong Dasang Zhamdong, the commander of the Tibetan army, into plotting an armed rebellion with the ultimate aim of seizing political power, but their attempt failed." Very good to know.

One question; whats a Panchen? -
Panchen Lama is the next highest rank second to Dalai Lama. Like Vice President or Arch-Angel.
or Robin, in Batman and Robin.-

Hey
Are you aware that your source is a Chinese website?
(assuming that chinese interests are involved in the website is only natural).
Do you agree?
I think you should use more sources which are perhaps a little more trust worthy -
JRM, yea totally! please contribute some. everything i've read have been in english only and primarily pro-west. this source is the closest i could get to getting acquainted with the other side (straight out of china!) and make the bigger picture more clear for sure. i've been checking on other British history stuff and it all seems to be consistent in facts. just truths are different on each side.

Given the source material, this seems to be a fairly neutral chinese historical account. I have never read anything from this point of view, and while it may be interesting, it does not ring as truth. I will check for additional sources that are perhaps more neutral. or perhaps a srouce which can identify why the "The Agreement on Measures for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet" signed in 1951 by their Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and the Tenth Panchen Erdeni and the Chinese Central Goverment failed, leading to the failed 1959 uprising.

Dear "Pressrecord," I think your journalist work is timely, informative and educative. I remembering seen Tibetan issues since the 80's. Therefore I can imagine that it has been a long time struggling for the Tibetan people. You're on the right path and very entitle to express your own opinion. We all know that as journalists, we are not perfect and we can slip here and there sometimes. However since you are the one covering it, you are also entitle to express yourself on the issue and I will not judge what you may think is biases. It is a new age of Journalism where we can no longer stick to a false and professional denial format. Anyway, All these wording just to tell you that I am in support of your cause in attempt to help the Tibetan people with a voice. Thanks,
thumbs up and keep up the good work. -
British Imperialism--this reads like the history of so many of their other adventures in colonization, not the least of which was India, and of course we could write a similar history covering the imperialism of the US via the covert operations of the CIA. I don't doubt any of what you have written, but for many, the issue of Tibet's independence is intrinsically tied to China's treatment of the monks, and China's ruthless persecution of their religion. It is certainly not surprising to find the British government positioning itself to manipulate that sympathy into something advantageous to their appetite for empire...and the US has also been guilty of the same sort of machinations. One need look no further than Central America to find some of the US's most egregious attempts at empire building.
I do not think China is in any way without guilt, and from my point of view, their claim to Tibet is not all that different from the US claim to California...these things always come back to how far back you want to go to validate the existing occupants right to be the ruling class. Mexican Americans in California are overwhelmingly treated like second class citizens, but look at the names of every county, city and street in Southern California and you have to ask yourself...what does this say about the history of California?-

While most of your facts may be true, pressrecord, you failed to mention the bahavior of the Communist Chinese government when they moved in to re-occupy Tibet as the 14th Dalai Lama left for India, and the atrocities they committed in the name of liberation. Hundreds of monasteries were destroyed, monks and nuns were forced at gunpoint to have sex, and priceless cultural artifacts were destroyed. China has been engaged in cultural genocide with the Tibetan people for decades, and it continues to this day. And by the bye, if the Chinese had legitimate claims to Tibet in the 1950's, why did they have to move in to "liberate" Tibet (their words, not mine) in the first place? How and why does someone liberate a territory that is already a part their own country? The continuing cultural genocide is the main focus of the current Dalai Lama's tack with the Chinese Government. He is not advoating for independence, rather for some sort of autonomy that would allow the Tibetans to continue with their religious beliefs. The Communists in China have been hopelessly out of touch with reality for so very long, and they are frustrated by the fact that they cannot edict the Dalai Lama into insignificance. The people who hold power in China are used to making edicts that are followed without question and accepted as the absolute truth. Now they are attacking the character of one of the most respected people on the planet-a Nobel Peace Prize winner, no less-and they are committing a serious PR faux pas, just as they have finally secured the role of Olympic host. All of their efforts to portray themselves as reasonable, thinking people of the 21st century will have been for naught. Those buffoons really do need to get out more.

Thank you to everyone who came and commented on the portion of the article I posted above. Yes, the source is from China so we know that the Chinese government had a hand in editing the information we read at that site.
Why did I post it? Well, I didn't post it any way to advocate for China or dispel the Free Tibet movement. Instead, I wanted to provide more information from a different point of view so we can start to build a bigger and better picture as to the complexity of the situation in Tibet.
Also, so that we can intelligently discern between what people are truly protesting against. Are they protesting against human rights violations? Are they protesting against China? Or, are they protesting simply for the purpose of going berserk on everyone else without truly helping the plight of the people they say they are protesting for?
Leave a webcam response.-

Well, everyone deserves to be free right? regardless of political history or records. So, I joined the protests for a Free Tibet because they have the right to be Free if they want to, and China doesn't have the right to decline that request....

As for the British, the world needs to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't inherit anything from this territorial severance, if any.

Very thorough post and great, intelligent comments.
The BBC have put together an FAQ about the China/Tibet issues that make for interesting reading and useful comparison here. -
this is a very sad breakdown of the recent history from the Free Tibet website:

ok, wo!
saw 4 images - enough for me.
I suppose Okinawamajik you can see that people getting raped and murdered in Tibet too man! -
there you go, assuming that i dont care about whats going on in tibet. but honestly...no one will hold their own governments accountable for allowing it, so why talk about it? american politicians will bow down to the american corporations that plan to make billions during the games. the american people will not pressure the american government to boycott the games entirely. and the american people will not actively en mass, do anything (im speaking in generalities here) to get the american gov to either put sanctions on the chinese, because the chinese own all of americas money. if china wanted to A. call all of the united states loans at once, it could destroy the usa...and B. if china pumped all of america's cash that it has back into circulation, it could destroy the united states.
so, honestly....what do you think is going to happen. china will be ok regardless. but no one here will do anything. and those pictures. as gruesome as they may be...there are millions of people dying in africa due to colonial rule and european interfering post independence. Tibet has been relatively harmonious. with the exception of being vic-ed at treaty signing time.
there is a difference.
the world could care less about millions of dying africans. millions dying at any given time. not dozens dying in the past month. both suck, but my urgency lies elsewhere-

I'm sorry but the source of this information does not appear to be "objective" and clearly has an agenda. What is contained on the site is little more than the PRC's official party line. I think one would be better served to find an unbiased source of information on Tibet/China relations rather than relying on on this site for any information. Particularly now given the state of affairs in Tibet today.
-
LOL.... well no time to comment on this all, however pressrecord, refering to the Penchan Lama as a 'vice' president shows a clear one sided ability to look at the world, that is a white eurocentric way of thinking about government....
Careful of your sources, I suppose you believe Sadam had wepons of mass destruction still and G.W. Idiot is a great presie... huh? -
Nothing, nothing at all justify murdering thousands of defenceless monks and destroying buddhist temples like certain chairman did in his time, and even more retain the real Panchen Lama as a political prisioner.
Now I ask, who are the criminals here?
Chinese people need to open their eyes to the truth and stop listening only what the government have to say or let them know.-
