Incest alive and well in South Australia

It's a disturbing tale, but the story of Jenny and John Deaves has to be seen to be believed. Father and daughter, separated by close to 30 years, have a nine-month old daughter and are continuing their relationship despite pressure from the legal system for them to stop.

They're not having sex anymore, apparently, but they still remain very much a couple, as Australia's 60 Minutes reported this weekend.

It makes your skin crawl, and we all know the heart can do strange things to the mind at times, but really ... I just can fathom incest at all. Is it a psychological disorder or something else? Whatever it is, I just don't get it.

  • It is far more widespread than most people realize.

  • That's disgusting, if I were a dad and that happened to me I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

  • As far as incest is concerned, it is prohibited in almost every society, called the 'incest taboo'. Because it's so well concealed, it is difficult to assess the prevalence of incest, but it is estimated that as many as 20 million Americans may be incest victims, meaning that about 1 in 10 have been affected.

I find that there should be an natural aversion to falling in love with your own flesh and blood and it only makes sense when you realize a lot of the cases involve abuse. When it is intentional, on both sides, like in this case, you still have to wonder, whether or not something fishy was going on from the start.

  • Obviously this feels extra icky because it's a father-daughter thing, but apparently it's a known phenomenon that when relatives who have been separated for a long time (especially siblings separated as children) are reunited they experience such a strange, strong bond and adoration that it's often interpreted as romantic love or sexual attraction. So much so that some adoption agencies now warn their clients who are seeking to be reunited that this might be the case. Sue Cowling, deputy director of the Post-Adoption Centre says "Genetic sexual attraction associated with IVF births is a time bomb waiting to go off."

  • i read that they did have a child together before, 7 years ago, but he died within the days of his birth because of a congenital heart problem. so this little girl is lucky to even be alive i hope she doesn't have any physical problems, we all know she's going to have same issues when she grows up, to say the least.

  • That is so horrifying! Imagine the psychosis of these people... How do you explain that to the poor child? Her Father is her Grandpa and her Mother is her Sister... Ick! What a hard road she has ahead of her...

  • So the poor kid has to come to terms with the fact that her sister is also her mum and her gran. And her granddad is also her dad. Jesus.

  • Leaving the disgusting part aside, that child will be the one that suffers from this relationship. She is the one that will get the genetic health problems not those two idiots. The woman should voluntarily be sterilized and then society should leave them alone. Personally I'd like to pin her to the table and forcibly sterilize her for what she has done to that baby. But she has rights too.
  • They say they're not having sex anymore - yeah right- why are they still living as a couple then. If I was them I certainly would not have gone public, not that I would have done it in the first place. They're life will never be they're own, that poor innocent child.

  • I feel sorry for the child and her future psychiatrists. Doesn't that make her her own Aunt? How do you explain this to her?

  • Being born directly of incest, I would guess that the child will be at a very high risk of suicide.

  • This is a little off topic - but it makes me wonder about all the kids who are here as a result of 'anonymous sperm doners' - how will they even really know if they're in an incestuous relationship? Different Mom but 100 same Daddies - yikes.

  • Wow, they say the family that plays together stays together. They may have taken it a tad bit too far though.

Children of incest aren't necessarily doomed to freakishness. The biggest issue is a greater chance of inherent genetic anomalies. Now if intelligence runs in your family there's a good chance you'll have a little genius or a at least a good circus act.

  • This is nothing new. It's just the most recent act of incest brought to light with a child born with no abnormalitiesl, so far. Yet i still view this behavior as animalistic instinct. how ever, I've never heard of the same brother sister/ father duaghter/ mother son behavior in any animal spieces. To conclude this behavior would bring them or anyone else who concieves such and act below the un-intellegent animals of the world. ty.
