Days may have 25 hours in near future

Days are gradually growing longer. To the layman this means that in the northern hemisphere days are longer in summer than they are in winter. But geoscientists interpret this phrase as follows: they found that days grow longer not only in spring time.

The reason for that is the Moon, first and foremost. Its gravity creates permanent waves in oceans and in Earth’s depths. Thus our planet seems to waver, the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung wrote.

Earth resembles a rotating figure skater. To slow rotations down, a figure skater stretches his or her arms out. That is why in the far future there will be 25 hours in a day. A British astronomer managed to prove that Earth’s rotation has been slowing down since 700 B.C.

  • that means one more hour of work or sleep.

  • Actually this will be much more beneficial to most since if people are not exposed to any stimuli that condition your body to sleep or be awake (i.e. sun, clocks, moon, etc.), then the sleep cycle shifts to a 25 hour day instead of the regular 24, so we really are losing an hour of sleep. Too bad we'll never get to see it.

  • I would be most happy with a 30 to 35 hour day so that I could get everything done that I want to do in any given day plus get enough sleep too.
    Vierotchka
  • yeah I know what you mean, it always feels like theres not enough hours in the day to get everything accomplished.

  • Great story.

So does this mean one extra hour of sleep or one extra hour of work? I know which one I'd rather have...

  • sometime we do not have enougth time to do all the things we have to do!!, But I know that also 29 hours will be not sufficient, and so on a day of 48 H. so what!! right now the time is the most precious thing we got.
do not waiste!! live second by second, xxx pepyo

  • awesome, a shorter life span for everything! i'm opting for an extra hour of not working.
    dahnae
  • Woot! More sleep.
  • I definitely could use an extra hour in the day.

  • Thanks for providing me a new excuse when I'm late for work-
"Boss, didn't you get the memo on the 25 hour day? I'm actually an hour early!"

  • the earth is coming to a stop, then it will shift, a start spinning the other way.

  • And I just bought a new set of antique clocks, dammit.

  • Damn...thats going to be a lotta non-recyclable clocks to throw out. It'll be like Y2K...2

  • Haha. Say goodbye to the analog clock. And Leap Day.

  • just the natural tendency of our universe to settle.

in millions (billions?) of years the earth will rotate like the moon, with one face constantly facing the sun. the moon, tides and tectonic shifts all play a part in the rotation of the glorious mysterious orb that is kind enough to carry us.

it will not begin rotating the other way any more than the moon did: inertia is cool.

  • The whole thing about a day being 24 hours goes back tot he numerology of 12 and it's significance on Earth in esoteric matters.

    12 signs of the zodiac
12 notes in the musical scale
    12 months of the year
    12 apostles
    12 tribes
    12 + 12 = 24

    12 x 5 = 60 seconds
    60 minutes in an hour
12 hours in a day and 12 hours in a night

They could have chosen the number 10 or 20 or 30 and divided the time it takes for the earth to complete a rotation into whatever number they wanted, but they "the nebulous they Emperor Pope Gregory who gave us the Gregorian calendar, wanted to make sure that Christianity even had its influence on time itself.

The earth's rotation slows every year as the moon gets farther away from the earth. Eventually the moon will wander off into space and the earth will begin to wobble violently on it's axis. But no matter how you slice it, the earth rotates 365.4 times in the time it takes to make one full circle around the sun. That is a fact. how many months, days, hours, or seconds they choose to divide that time by is relative to the desires of those in charge.

I know that the whole changing the time for daylight savings thing is supposed to be about saving money on energy costs, but I think that there is something much more sinister about this. They do it to constantly keep us off balance and not become aware of the movements of the earth and it's relationship with the sun. Too much awareness of such things would wake too many of the sheep up. They would become more like goats then, too independent.

I think there is something to this but I am not sure what exactly.

This was all in keeping with the number thing.

  • So is this going to change the date of the Mayans prediction for the end of the world (Dec. 21 2012)?
    GreyntheWolf
  • There will never be 25 hours in a day, they will still keep to the 24 hour thing, only adjust time more often than leap years.
    jubal
  • When is this "near future" they keep talking about? 10 from now? 50? 1,000,000?
    CCashman
  • Actually GreyntheWolf the Mayans did not predict the end of the world, they predicted the emergence of a new one. Yes there is a difference..the world won't end, but I really think there will be a lot of Geological changes and so forth. My best guess is that the shifting of the poles will cause this whole 25 hour day thing...BUT even if it did, there is a very distinct possibility that we would keep the 24 hour day even though it's not accurate just to appease the powers that be that came up with the 24 hour period in the first place.
    BobtheEnforcer
  • that'll take 3 years off my life expectancy... easy come, easy go...
    panikpanik
  • The article states: "over a millennium a day grows longer by two thousandths of a second."

So, BobtheEnforcer, maybe you can explain to us where you got "in the near future" from...
    hack26
  • As long as that extra hour is happy hour, I'm down.
    mirimysweet
  • Couldn't they just make a second a bit longer to compensate?
    jonbrooks
  • Does it mean I could live longer?
    Neghie
  • Hardly news. The moon has been pulling away from earth since it was spawned from a collision with earth 1 several billion years ago. The days back then were much shorter on the order of 12 hour days. The days will continue to get longer until the moon spins out of orbit with the earth which it will do in the far future. The days will be really long then but without the moon we will probably have died long before it finally left orbit. Since the sun continues to burn hotter and hotter we can only live on earth about another million years anyway, so it is kind of a moot point.

  • Sweet! Having 25 hours in a day might make my dream of "metric time" come true. If only we can convince people to have 100 minutes in an hour, then I won't be late to everything (I tend to look at the clock, see "1:50" and think "Oh, well I've got half an hour to be where I need to be at 2" The real solution to this problem is probably getting more sleep, though.)
    ultravphunter
  • Awesome. A extra hour in my day, to burn L's.

  • We'll all die younger!!!

  • They will need to change the case of beer from 24 to 25.
    chemicalbros
  • yeah I'm not sure the near future is quite vague, but my best guess is the upcoming pole shift slated for 2012.
    BobtheEnforcer
  • miri - remember, it's *always* happy hour somewhere in the world.

  • Here Here for more hours in the day!

a 36 hour day would be the best! Go Universe!

  • Someone is going to figure out that if you have an extra hour each day and don't spend 1/25th of it at work, you should have your pay reduced accordingly. Just you watch.
