  • but then again, look how urban dictionary defines urban dictionary...

    1. urban dictionary

A place formerly used to find out about slang, and now a place that teens with no life use as a burn book to whine about celebrities, their friends, etc., let out their sexual frustrations, show off their racist/sexist/homophobic/ anti-(insert religion here) opinions, troll, and babble about things they know nothing about.

    Urbandictionary.com isn't a burn book or a webjournal site.

(props to TK for originally pointing this out)

  • There's alot of good stuff on Youtube - that's actually original - but it's overlooked by in lieu of a lot of fluff and titilation.

As for Current, it's growing. Give it time. There's some quaity stuff here.

I think however the problem with Current is not the idea of current or even the station itself but the some of the users themselves. One of the complaints I've heard from those who don't want to upload to Current is that some of the critics on pods give ridiculous criticism that smacks of pretentiousness. I think this comes from a mixing of amateurs and semi-professionals who have education and equipment. Too much focus on the quality and not the content. Plus a rather high expectations from users and staff at times for what they want to see.

  • when i first discovered current, gl ing pods actually mattered to get them on tv.,(a feature that is returning soon.. right?), and although i'm no expert or nething i did leave some observations and criticism behind... but what actually mattered for me was the heart (content), so i never rl'd pods with a good story.

In fact, in spite of some flaws i gl'd the truly substantial ones...

Don't need to be afraid, producers out there, we don't bite!

If you wanna be in the fight u gotta learn to take the punches, hey, who knows, maybe u'll learn sumthin new.... and us too!!

    :)

  • Hi SamuraiDave, good to see you again. About the dictionary - sad but true! Actually I do think Current has missed the opportunity, at least in the UK, to establish good bonds with grassroot video activists, community-based film makers and budding journalists, by not commissioning them quick enough and not paying them (enough to make a living) for insightful and thoughtful content people have been passionate and enthusiastic about. It is not the place people want to work with and for anymore, and there seems to be a wide opinion that it is a shame of a wasted opportunity.

Same with closing the forum really, so there is no place for public accountability anymore and no room for criticism.

  • who actually thinks they can make a living out of making pods solely for current tv?

    i mean, c'mon!

    we are still toddlers here...
    jade_azul16
  • on the other hand, how much do you expect to get payed for three on air minutes!!?
    jade_azul16
  • jade, I think what Ulla is refering to is a complaint a number of producers or would-be producers had about payment. $500 is fair but some of the demands by some staff and users go beyond what $500 would cover.

I don't blame the staff as much because before the whole site switcheroo I saw several staff members such as yourself defend content over quality and I more than appreciate that.

Often my problem and others that I spoke with who couldn't be bothered to even submit was the useless criticism coming from users who apparently had somewhat strong backgrounds in film and/or photo-journalism and had access to heavy duty equipment. There was (and is) too much of a demand to adhere to formula and some of the criticism seems to be entirely from the viewing side of the camera with little or no understanding of difficulties behind it. The critiicism tends to be useless when a producer was trying to do something else or if the event covered was a one time thing.

As for payment a 3-minute pod shouldn't have to break a producer's back where they spend hours and hours shooting, interviewing, editing, etc... just for a measly $500. I mean c'mon! That's chickenfeed for the amount of time and effort some clueless folks here demand out of pods. Even CNN isn't that demanding. And then there are pods that look like they took about 3 minutes to make getting $500 while pods that took ages to satisfy the ridiculously high demands by some here are getting the same or a whopping $1000 which ain't all that either these days.

  • Urban Dictionary: A dictionary that nobody reads because it defines stuff nobody needs to look up. The dictionary has definitions for words that are not at all actuate or nice. It is not even a book.
