400+ kids taken from Polygamist compound
More than 400 children, mostly girls in pioneer dresses, were swept into state custody from a polygamist sect in what authorities described Monday as the largest child-welfare operation in Texas history.

The days long raid on the sprawling compound built by now-jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was sparked by a 16-year-old girl's call to authorities that she was being abused and that girls as young as 14 and 15 were being forced into marriages with much older men.

  • Here's a news piece about the event.

The contrast of the pioneer dresses and the antiquated hairstyles, with the bright yellow, modern bus in the picture above is very eye-catching.

  • I'm so disgusted, I'm not sure what to say.

Those women & children will need therapy for the rest of their lives.

  • wow! im with binary sunset: i have no clue what to say!

  • I remember hearing that they can't find the girl who made the call. My only hope is that all of these women have the courage to talk about what, inf anything, happened to them.

  • Don't knock it til you try it. haha. The kids wouldn't know any different if the state didn't tell them the lives they were leading was wrong. The abuse is horrible and shouldn't go unpunished but we shouldn't judge. Texas isn't the most liberal state anyway.

I just hope the allegations are were not false. Have they found any specific evidence against the man? So many Americans rush to judge what's different and I could see some random person from a neighboring community calling this in.

There are polygamists, both male and female, who are happy and content with what they have. I may not understand it, but I have no right to judge it.

I hope the foster care system in Texas can handle this many new cases at once.

  • This is most likely a huge blow to polygamist, and the church of latter day saints. It isn't fair to judge these people for their beliefs, but I can't help to think that there is some level of manipulation for those who are too young to understand they deserve freedom, not confinement to a life of theological rule.

  • djknockout:

One would hope that if the authorities made a "raid" that there would be justifiable cause.

Child Protective Services operate on a "triage" system and only seek police assistance in the most urgent of situations. (I used to have to work with CPS and I was constantly disappointed by cases that weren't taken seriously.)

Yes, this particular case is sensational and the media is probably eating it up, but one would HOPE that there is justifiable cause for prosecution.

Even if the person who made the report wasn't completely truthful, the fact that they have found so many young girls (under 16) with children the police would at least have probable cause to search the area.

Yes, polygamy is a choice among consenting adults, but, again, many of those found at this place are not adults. It's unfortunate that such an extremist sect is associated with any church.

I do hope that the legal system will actually work in this particular case.

  • Is Big Love still on? I haven't seen it lately - excellent acting - very creepy subject.

I think about my daughter and nieces and if only one child is saved from being raped, it will be worth it. What if that one child was someone you loved and cherished?

  • I'm all for letting adults being kinky and having multiple partners if that makes them happy but to bring children into the loop is quite disgusting.

I can't imagine them raiding the compound and taking 400+ children without good reasons, I just hope they're better off now seeing that the foster system isn't all that its cracked up to be.
  • i know i defiantly don't want to quickly judge whats going on over there. most of us will agree that children should not be forced in to marriage, let alone be forced to have sex with anyone. but we shouldn't be disrespectful to their culture.

  • polygamy is a disgusting idea. it's marriage that is twisted and perverted.
however. if some one subjects theme selfs to something such as this they should know that one of the practices is for men to marry much younger girls. by joining a polygamist sect you are agreeing to these terms.
i do not condone the practice of polygamy; but i do not condone the call made upon know practice and tradition.

  • ahem, wake up foiks! Another really good distraction while the dollar falls and the Shadow Gov't moves forward with the next chapter in the shutdown of the American Economy.

These people had the right to do what they want. Who knows if there really was a abused teen or not...a good Public Relations team can easily produce this desired effect.

    I dont buy it.

  • S_Cruzme, your right. More WMD's -- Weapons of Mass Distraction.
    Tomcatt
  • This is disgusting!
Hopefully our future holds more intelligent ways to break up these harmful cults.
S-Cruzme I disagree. This needs to be aired..too important and not just a distraction yet...teens and children sexually abuse and women prisoners...seems like a no brainer to me.
I doubt if it will all be fake.

  • im not aggreeing with the polygamist lifestyle but some choose to live that way and they should have the right to choose which way they would like to..BUT WITH SOMEONE OF AGE!. although most of those kids didnt even think they were doin anything wrong. like someone else said none of those kids would have known the life they were living was bad if the state hadnt intervened. my only hope is that the kids can get through all the abuse they were put threw

  • this is wierd...not as creepy as the austrailian father/daughter incest baby story, but its pretty close...& i'm usually down for everyone doing their own thing, but the icky religious aspect of this story is a serious deal breaker.

i bet the ratings for that hbo show big love will be thru the roof next season!)
