Iran plows ahead with nuclear program

Iran has begun installing 6,000 new centrifuges at its uranium enrichment plant in Natanz, state television quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying Tuesday.

Iran already has about 3,000 centrifuges operating in Natanz, and the new announcement is seen as a show of defiance of international demands to halt a nuclear program the United States and its allies say is aimed at building nuclear weapons.

"The president announced the start of the phase of installing 6,000 new centrifuges in Natanz," state television reported.

  • You may disagree with his politics but you can't deny his great fashion sense :D

  • The BBC have a good break down on the IAEA's report into Iran's Uranium enrichment program. It's well worth a look if you want to see the headlines.

Incidentally, Fox New's headline states, "IAEA Report Says Iran Has Bomb Plans"...read it yourself and see if that's actually the case.

  • That man is scaaary, but alas, we've got better things to worry about...like this useless war we've overextended our military resources for. Whose gonna listen to anything we say now?

  • Excerpt:

"Centrifuges are high speed spinning machines used to enrich uranium. Iran has so far enriched uranium to a low level, which can be used to generate electricity. It has denied any intention to produce highly enriched uranium, which can be used for manufacturing atomic weapons. According to the U.S. National Intelligence Estimates, Iran ceased work on atomic weapons in 2003."

What the article describes is the industrial production of energy through the use of uranium; nothing more, nothing less.

  • we lie in wait in the deserts of iraq afghanistan and kuwait building military installations of which we will use to invade iran. now its just a race who can get theres first. if it goes as planned we will probably have our bases and troops ready by the time they have their big bombs and we can blow the crap out of each other in one amazing hellfire...perhaps even spark some world war. wouldnt that be an interesting bit.

  • Al-Jazeera also has a more objective side to the story.

  • "Iran has begun installing 6,000 new centrifuges ......."

Where did the centrifuges come from?

From whom did they buy them?

  • No one needles our (alleged) president like Iran's. He knows exactly what he's doing.

  • why should'nt they have have nuclear energy..there is a lot of speculation going on again much like the w.m.d saga that started iraq's problems.America were the first to use the nuclear bomb ...then the french decided to test the last one under water when they were asked not to..the israeli's have nuclear possibilities india england..surely there are enough nuclear missiles around to blow the planet 10 times over.Once again the threat is from paranoia...you may produce gunpowder but only some use it to make fireworks..?

  • The iran boogey man is back...does that mean Israel will stop buying oil from Iran?

    Israel's Tehran connection

Israel, while supposedly observing an ironclad boycott of all things Iranian, is happily buying Iranian oil

  • I look forward to a time when the U.S. has a president who can actually dialog with these leaders so as to enhance global communication and awareness.
    ...
A leader who can actually speak English will be an improvement at this point.

  • I sort of feel like Iran likes being the ring-leader of the "axis of evil". Ahmadinejad wears it like a badge of honor. Not sure I blame him.

  • Scar-to-the-e! Anyone else think it maybe a cause for alarm? Not that they have ever listened before but they are oblately defying what the United Nations asked them NOT to do. Big concern.

    What do you guys think!?

  • I think its about time for Israel to do some bombing let them at Iran they would have all the bomb making buildings and friendly Iranian bomb makers in paradise in no time.

  • the apocalypse will be televised . the 4 horsemen will be seen rampaging in the east during an urgent news-break while the american public is watching BS network TV shows after a long , soul sucking day at work - gabriel will blow his horn , and the dead will be rising as some under-sexed suburban soccer mom is micro-waving a frozen pizza for her obese kids , etc.

  • So I take it that the general consensus is that Iran does not have the right to a cheap energy resource? We all know Ahmadinejad is a nut, but I don't think that Iranians should be kept in the dark ages because people are scared of intentions of cheap energy. Iran and Iranians have maintained that this is for energy uses only. How many times can I mention energy in this posting. Most people think that Iran is a horrible place, however, Tehran is more modern than many American towns. Energy.

  • Only AMERICANS would think that SIXTY YEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY is the sole domain of the United States.

Iran has the RIGHT nuclear infrastructure for energy purposes, especially when the NIEs were demonstrated to confirm Iran's statements...

especially when the IAEA declares Iran in compliance.
    http://www.iaea.org/NewsCenter/Focus/IaeaIran/index.sht...

Americans: you're all insane & egotistical trigger freaks, aren't you?

The problem is that NUCLEAR ENERGY is as dangerous for WESTERN societies as it is for anybody else. THE PROBLEM is that nobody is developing sustainable, low-impact energy solutions.

Americans are chomping @ the bit to bomb-bomb-bomb Iran. its disgusting & there are international BILLIONS who realize the US can no longer be trusted.

America has succumbed to the ReichWing 'zero-sum game' fallacy that human rights & prosperity cannot be shared by Humanity... that hegemony is the only solution for 'American Prosperity'.

    sickening.

  • while i can see the reasonableness of anyone's pro/con arguments about what should happen with "nuclear proliferation" - so long as the argument is reasonable ( i'm fairly reasonable ) - the whole "generalization " routine about " america sucks , you people are sickening " get's a little old - in case you haven't owned a TV in a while , a radio , or only have access to the internet when the gods on high deem you worthy of divine revelation , all americans are not insane - in fact , if you care to take your head out of your ass for a second , you might notice that there are more than a few peeps in the US whom are raging mad at the status quo and are demanding change - seriously , i'm not making this up .

there are billions watching... we're so sick of American excuses on why the 'Leaders of the Free World' aren't to blame for the actions of the 'democracy'.

<a href=" http://thiscanadian.typepad.com/this_canadian/2008/03/c... the 'liberal' Clinton Democrats & their 'scorched earth' extortion & sniveling is just about as much validation as my comments require</a>

just listen to 'conservative' Americans shriek about how Human Rights & resources are a 'zero-sum game'... hegemony or bust!

come on... let's not pretend that its impolite to be disgusted... isn't it about time we stop pretending & acknowledge what the WORLD has known... since at least the inception of the School of the Americas / "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation"?

  • at least the iranian president appears to be doing something to address his country's needs for long-term energy..

compare to bush's solution.. create instability in oil rich areas while allowing big oil companies to rip off consumers based on fear and speculation.. forget about mandating research or benefits for alternative fuel, let alone nuclear..

    bush is an idiot..

  • if every "terrorist" in this world would re-locate to iran and establish a real "terrorist state" there, i'd help break ground on nuke launching sites by shoveling dirt , just to finally have a real terrorist state - not a sponsor state , but a real nation consisting exclusively of terrorists , which could then negotiate it's demands on an equal footing with the rest of the world which wouldn't contain "terrorists" - it would simplify things for everyone .

You find world war interesting? Do you also find it amusing? Are you looking for total annihilation?

  • A large number of people in Iran are Jewish. There has been a long standing relationship between the people of the two countries. When I lived in worked in Los Angeles many years ago my employer was an Iranian Jew. He was the most generous and awesome boss I ever worked for.
    jubal
  • oh no.. no no no..

you cannot talk about iranians and jews in a favorable light.. that goes against the demonization process.. if people catch on that iranians are anything other than turban-wearing terrorists who are hell bent on destroying america, israel, and all things righteous, then the justification to kill them will come into question..

    and that isn't allowed..

  • I see nobody has learned anything, go look what happened in 1938 it might give you a clue of what the future holds. Have a nice day.
    plastic
  • yes because 1938 is 2008.. george bush is franklin roosevelt.. and ahmadinejad is hitler..

it all fits so nicely! now.. if only we could find a beach off the persian gulf to storm..

if you are truly interested in "learning", you don't have to go back 70 years.. just 5.. when 2008 was 2003.. george bush was george bush.. and saddam hussein was hitler..

..and they lived happily ever after
