Over half of Mumbai's 13 million live in slums, with the largest being Dharavi...the "Heart of Mumbai". Centrally located, Dharavi is in a prime location for redevelopment...a massive project with huge implications for the over 500,000 residents.

excellent pod...apparently the people in charge of this project haven't learned from places like chicago & the suburbs of paris, because i've never seen projects or hardcore gentrification ever work anywhere...especially for the poor people its supposed 2 have the greatest impact on.

Fascinating film. There is no doubt that the sanitation and water issues need to be addressed for health reasons of the people living there. On the other hand this is a dynamic community of survivors who built something out of nothing. I fear that this project reeks of diempowerment of these people. I wonder if there was any community consultation?

I doubt that there was any consultation. One thing that bothers me is that this will have a Katrina effect on these people. Katrina(gov't) will come and destroy, the people will be promised the new housing, but instead they get shafted and displaced, all the while, developers come in with one goal, PROFIT. Also, the employment problem will bother me too. It all depeds on what type of jobs they are because no one wants to work in an office, or as a cheap "slave" laborer of sorts. This is all part of the grand scheme to "class up the world". This is a facade. Just hook them up with toilets and running water, and leave them be!!
