This is one of those things you have to take a moment to process, as in "did he really just say that?" What's sad is Sen. McCain then shakes his hand and smiles to his wonderful cheering audience. Even sadder, most likely neither man even realized the depravity of the moment or introductory statement. Ridiculous racist sentiment aside, is this really the best person they could find to make this intro? Public speaking doesn't seem to be is forte or first best destiny. Saddest of all - this clown as reproduced, creating a whole new generation of forward thinkers such as himself.
Sen. Obama should use this for fund raising at the very least and if this doesn't convince you to support not only the man but what he so obviously stands for in the face of such arcane ideals nothing else will. In essence one is either part of the new solution or part of the age old problem.

being compared to Tiger Woods is not a bad thing, in fact Richie Rich just gave Obama a complement without knowing it, after all Tiger is the best and most dominant athlete of our lifetime...

The man said that a U. S. senator and war hero is a better role model for his ( and presumably our) kids than a professional golfer. Why do you think that just because he compared a person of color unfavorably with a white person, the underlying motive has to be racial prejudice?
I'm a strong Obama supporter for a lot of reasons, one of them being his desire and ability to see the best in everyone and bring people together. I don't think he wants his supporters bringing up race at every opportunity. -
OMG. It couldn't be any more clear... it's our boy or some Tiger Woods like dude wink wink. John McCain just lost my vote regardless of who he is running against even if Condie does sign on. You sick bastards. If you are so great then just be great and your color won't matter. If you are not so great then maybe you'll need a fear tactic. Booooooooo. Wait I almost forgot, the republican party is colorblind (Robert Randolph). Forget all that stuff I said. :)
-
And yeah so Tiger Woods is mixed just like Obama. And he is the man in golf so. . . I fail to see the insult besides him just being racist as hell!!
Yeah McCAin 08!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
rkokish,
Please tell me you don't actually believe that? Perhaps you were just trying to keep the conversation going by taking an alternative point of view JUST for the sake of argument.
What possible reason, other than some sarcastic demeaning remark based on ethnic background, would he choose compare John McCain to Tiger Woods? I agree some will see racism behind every shadow or off the cuff remark and that's not good but that isn't the case here. As I said before, in this situation one either sees it for what it is or is part of the underlying problem. -
The Tiger Woods reference is clearly racist. It's part of the Republican party that's afraid America will no longer have the white majority. OMYGOD...what then!! lol
-
you could vote for a real American like John McCain here, or, um, what's-his-name, Macaca over there...

So, basically he compared Obama to a multiethnic, racially "black" man who is the greatest thing in golf, and arguably outshines his white colleagues, yes?

You have to think that he could have chosen any one of the celeb supporters of Obama to illustrate the comparison... it's pretty obvious he knew what he was saying.

This clip is pretty suspect out of context like this. Isn't it likely that his meaning is, "among the adults children admire, Tiger Woods being an oft-cited favorite, my children admire John McCain?" I mean, I don't think we can tell from the way his speech is edited together and presented at all. Don't be so quick to judge, for fuck sake.
Otherwise, this guy is saying that (a) he doesn't much care for Tiger Woods and (b) that Obama reminds him of Tiger, and he means this to suggest somehow that Obama is bad. Does that make any sense? I know it's POSSIBLE, it just seems a bit of a stretch.
Does anyone have the full video? -
Staff Sgt. Bolovia (sp) wasn't commenting on Obama's golf game (who knows, maybe he golfs like he bowls). What he was doing was an attempt to diminish the Senator by defining him by only his race. Note the word attempt.
Was it stupid? I'd say yes. And not only because it is a racist thing to do. But because it's a terrible analogy. Being compared to Tiger Woods is actually a compliment. Should we give him a pass because his attempt was not only shameful but also ineffective. To that I'd say no.
The bigger question is about McCain. How do we feel about his rewarding Bolovia with a hug (a big George Bush style hug)?
Me...not so good. -
I agree Krag, this should definitely not be given a pass, but they're going to turn their statement on the public for "insinuating" that what they said was racially motivated.
The problem does remain that McCain gladly welcomed Bolovia with a hug and a smile.
One thing though, at lease these people aren't even trying to hide their bigoted attitudes-

Blazeboy,
The video comes from a MSNBC news story broadcast to the general public in prime time last night. I'm feeling pretty good about it's authenticity.
What doesn't make any sense is why he would compare Sen. McCain to Tiger Woods at all, unless you take the obvious racial context into consideration.
You of course have the right to support the candidate of your choice but please make sure you know that candidate well and don't get caught up in the hype, spin and or delusions. Above all else don't ignore the obvious to justify your position and don't make excuses for prejudice. -
whos surprised? mccain voted against having martin luther king jr day a national holiday. the facts link up...
great.. another narrow minded leader. just what we need.. NOT -
he wanted to have martin luther king jr day revoked?? Are you sure because that's pretty crazy...
Racism is still so prevalent in this country and obviously still on the surface. We should vote for Obama not because he is black but because he is trying to transcend these deep-rooted social problems that are still affecting every aspect of our lives in America (the so-called "leader" of the world?) -
mwillens
Here's a link to an article about McCain's votes regarding the MLK holiday.
http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2008/04/78...
And here's the Cliff's Notes (do they still make Cliff's Notes?) version.
"In 1983, McCain was one of 77 Republican Congressmen to vote against establishing a federal holiday in MLK's honor."
"The 1983 vote, however, is the not the end of the issue. In 1987, Arizona's Republican Governor repealed the state's recognition of King; McCain supported the decision. He changed his mind in 1990, when a King holiday was put to a vote in the state.
But even by 1990, McCain hadn't come to appreciate what King stood for. The Civil Rights Act of 1990 sought to overturn "Supreme Court rulings that made it much more difficult for individual employees to prove discrimination." The legislation was fought by big business, because it imposed new penalties on employers convicted of job discrimination. McCain voted against the act four times."
He also has an interesting history with the confederate flag...but we can save that for another day.
*To be fair to the Senator, in 1999 he admitted that he was wrong to vote the way he did. -
My state's polititans aren't much better. Our secratary of state (R) Tod Rokita used slavery analogies at an all white political rally where he said quote "The relationship between Democrats and Blacks in America is a master slave relationship. Black's are the slaves of the democratic party."
There was a funny moment that followed this one, another McCain supporter stepped to the mike and said, I will drop my support of John McCain and support who ever you want Tiger, if you just play one round of golf with me. I'd drop McCain in a second. I apologize senator but I would." I think those comments underscore the fact that the candidate was aware of the offensive nature of the comments, as the supporter was clearly trying to ease the tensions in the crowd. This is not the first racialy insensitive remaks associated with McCain as he stood by his state's governor when he called blacks in Arizona "pickaninies." McCain has also voted against three civil rights bills, and against the legislation making Dr. Martin Luther King Day a holiday. I see a double standard emerging in this race. Obama was lambasted for Reverend Rights remarks as was Hillary for racialy insensitive remarks made by Geraldine Feraro. McCain simply has not been held to the same standard in this regard. -
My 27 and 30 year old sons are multi-ethnic. My father was Greek and my mother German, Scotch, Irish, Welsh, and English. The boys' mother is half Chinese and half Russian. Both my sons are handsome, strong, smart, and tolerant. They endured some racism growing up, but both just laugh at comments of the sort made by the guy in the clip. My sons' friends have been all shapes, sizes, and colors, and their generation will no longer put up with the ignorant crap dished out by the mentally feeble. Let him babble until the day he gets a clue.

what's funny is that in the world of golf Woods is often criticized as being too good - so good that he takes excitement out of the game , and is thus almost boring to watch - to equate Obama with Woods is pretty much like saying " McCain offers the promise of being exciting because he'll be incompetent , and fuck things up a lot , thus keeping things interesting by his bad handicap " - and if McCain's closest rival was a black woman , this moron would have said "you can keep your venus / serena williams " .
-
I vote in favor of labeling the staff sergeants comments as racist. McCain is going to loose, he looks like a specter.
-
whoa. They were sore about Rev. Wright, and now they're even more sore that Obama took the high road. these people need to ice their loins in their own homes, with dignity. Don't air about your stinking sore crotchety crotches to the world.
Seriously, racism never looked so easy. -
The response from that crowd chilled me... surely there were some people in there who did a double-take!
So we know that Barrack Obama is not a professional golfer, isn't filthy rich, nor is not married to a supermodel... what connection could this man possibly be making between Senator Obama and Tiger Woods???recommended by jade_azul16 -
i didn't even get the reference at first. not the best way to introduce someone i would say.
-
Idk, it didnt sound that offensive to me at first. Maybe im just not listening good enough. It seemed like the guy was just saying the first thing that came to his mind.

I quote old Mc' Cain as saying ''The transcendental challenge of the century is Islamic Terrorism'' the man is obviously suffering some kind of cognitive dementia! He's an old senile ex war hero, and is probably suffering from PTWS too! come on, might as well keep bush in for another term if voting in Old MC cain is the case, but, thats not an option...Argh

All this does not matter, what should is for the majority Americans to realize that it's time for change and endorse/vote in the right person for the job of 'commander in chief'. And by and large there seems to be only one person that fits-the-bill, I'll let you America decide....
-
With out focusing on the issue of who is the better candidate from President, this comment is just plain dumb and racist. As everyone before has mentioned, comparing Obama to Woods is actually a compliment and makes no sense unless, the reference was clearly made because the two share another obvious quality... both Tiger and Obama can't bowl.
-
hmm, another white dude shoving his shoes and foot down his throat .. a sucker is born every minute and this guy epitomozes that .. sadly, many white dudes like this seeth with these racist/sexist notions in their heads as they chuck pebbles into the old andy griffith pond of wavering idiocy ..
-
My mom always told me a fool will always reveal them selves to be so. Ha, and the funny thing is he's probably feeling good about himself that he said that. Eh, it's always gonna be around, but I agree people are starting to wake up and realize the foolishness people use to keep us divided. B.Ob will probably use the sample on his next mixtape...
-
This is horrible, but I think he may not have meant for it to be a racist comment, but just an analogy that gave off a visual effect as well.
I wouldn't think that Sen. McCain would want any type of racism supported in any of his talks, but I guess you never know.
Or maybe even this guy was hired and paid by the democrats to plant this "bomb" on McCain to give them a fighting chance in the presidential race.
Or maybe this guy is a frustrated racist without a big enough ego for people to listen to him, so he slipped that little comment in to get his point across before McCain came on.
Either way, I'm really surprised at this whole story.
Quite shocking that there's still people out there that don't realize this world is for everyone, not just anglo-saxon white supremacists.
-
Wow, did you here the crowd's reaction to that one. The oooos sounded like somebody got in trouble in elementary school.
Tiger Wood is a great role model for our children, sir. The reason why he is so good is that he worked his butt off. It doesn't matter if he was white, it matters how hard you work. That's at least what I look for in people.
Well I hope this hurts Mr. Millionyearwar even more. I think the war comments have hurt him enough already with independents and conservative democrats who might have voted for him. -
It was a dumb statement , not very good at public speaking , but just like hillary and obama and the people that work the campaign trail they all have made stupid statements. Take them down , flog them , cane them in the town square.Oh wait maybe we should focus on the real issues that are of real concern to this country and not morons that are trying to get ahead by kissing ass. Maybe if we as Americans actually had more than a 60 second attention span and ask the media to ask the right questions at the debates and tell the candidates not to grandstand and not whine about how everyone is picking on me, we might get some real answers. Maybe we could ask these so called news stations to give us information on all the candidates, like what happened to the libertarian party? The media controls the election without even giving the proper coverage to blind eyed gossip hounds that seem to be the majority of the voters in ill informed society. Hmmm, maybe I'm a little critical.
-
DKLAX...you've got some pretty creative theories there. And I guess...anything is possible. But there is no mistaking how the crowd responded to that line and that McCain hugged the guy anyway...and then did not mention that comment, and hasn't since. At least that's how it's been reported.
Which leads me to ask...does anyone have a link to the full video? I think I have a pretty clear idea on the intent of the comment, but after all the Pastor Wright stuff, it can't hurt to see the context. I can't find it...just the clips. -
You get the feeling that the upper echelon haven't necessarily forgotten to think before speaking, but rather accepting of comments such as this as commonplace.
-
Not that Tiger isn't the man. He is.

what the fool was alluding to was the fact that both Woods and Obama are mixed raced persons of color - which is even more racist than just alluding to their being "black" , as it also implies that mixed race persons are even lower than "full blooded " black people - or that having white blood mixed with black is an unholy abomination to the purity of "whites" - it's your standard neo-nazi racial philosophy - regardless , both the announcer and McCain should be issuing a formal apology if they haven't already - and i hope this clip gets broadcasted widely , if it hasn't yet .

Now that I"ve thought about it - Tiger Woods is smart, has business sense, is a non-stop humanitarian and has friends and influence all over the world. Maybe we should vote for him?
-
First off, get on those public speaking skills
Second, get off the road that has been built since this country was founded.
-We are no different from each, a little color here and there through diversity is the only thing that has ever made people creatively think, something this man has never done.
-He's probably just pissed because both Woods and Obama are more successful and honorable then he will ever be, despite the advantage he had of being white.
-Now think twice before you vote Republican this fall.
