Human failure is a bigger killer than nature when disasters hit the world, according to a new report.
A study for Oxfam International found the choices of politicians, poor decisions and bad management were to blame for the worst catastrophes...

Interesting piece, highlighting a pretty bleak situation. Surely there needs to be something done to improve the support people more susceptible to natural disasters get?

We have nothing on fleas and mosquitoes, though.

I agree because some people take too long to do anything about a problem until its turned for the worst.

It doesn't have to be this way.
In a democratic society, you have the power of choice.
And in every walk of life, you are responsible for your own actions.
Make them good.-

The human race has come so far, but apparently not far enough, if we can't efficiently help one another in times of disaster and preserve the Earth we share.
-
Obviously...

First thought: Duh.
Second thought: My dad tells me stories about how much his generation thought the previous one had f***ed everything up in the world and that his generation was going to fix everything. Now, his generation is in power, more or less, and now I feel that our generation will have to fix this mistakes of the previous generations. When will this cycle end? Are we ever going to a reach a point where our children won't have to be responsible for fixing up the world?-

I could have told you that. Humans are terrible people, but humanity is very young and (if we don't all kill each other) maybe things will get better(IF we don't all kill each other).
-
change is coming...
we need to embody change in every choice, be conscious of all our actions and strive to co-create our universe in a way that we are all benefiting, all sharing and all growing.
will this change. be this change. enjoy this change.

personally , i'm happy believing that , in my time , i'll be able to weather the changes when our species returns to a " barter economy " opposed to one which depends entirely on "futures speculation " and paper assets - as a former eagle scout i can set traps and catch small rodents , and given enough bbq sauce , eat them , while dressing the dish up with wild veggies - and i am an ace at catching fish with any kind of line and a handmade hook made out of a paperclip - in other words , i don't have to hope for any kind of future , except one that includes me in it , regardless of the circumstances . ( oh yeah , i don't mind cockroaches either)

They just figured this out? Look at history, and it's plain as day to figure out. more taxpayer dollars wasted on useless research. If only those who didn't have high intelligences had a higher common sense we would all be geniuses.

interesting piece! and it is very true that humans will destroy things alot quicker than anything else.
I hope societies will start to realize we only have one Earth to live on and we better start taking care of it now!-

Humans are deadly, If we don't start changing our way and helping one another. We will be our own fallout of our own kind. Not nature or an object from outterspace,
the signs are there! Lets start making this place better for all of us. With the way we speak to one another, and see each other. Also how we treat this third planet from the sun. -
StephenThomson, Some people don't have a choice. The power is ruled by money, guns, and a crazy person that has soldiers. Soldiers that follow orders without questioning "Tall organization". Levels of authority that decide everything. The Human animal acts just like other animals.

No wonder I was getting dirty looks from some squirrels today.

well that's a sad world, dontipo, when the individual can no longer be held responsible for his actions; rather, his sovereignty is swept up in the forces of his institution, be it an army or a corporation. the world then becomes a play of runaway giants, and we little people merely cling to its swinging limbs, forsaking all personal dignity and responsibility.
I dont buy it. A soldier who kills another soldier is nothing more than one man killing another. And shamefully, for no other reason than because he was told to.-

Lol, huntre. Watch out for the birds too. I think they're planning something.

I blocked off a squirrels hole going inside my roof and the squirrel was yelling at me. I got scared.

I don't understand what is so hard about sending people help and making a right decision. Don't forget though, we are the ones that elect these people! Our Choice.
