It has emerged that the Chinese authorities have reportedly uncovered a criminal plot to kidnap athletes at the Beijing Olympics.

The Chinese spokesman for the ministry of public security, Wu Heping, announced that one of the two groups arrested was based in the restive western Xinjiang region of China.

35 people have been arrested between March 26 and April 6 for plotting to kidnap athletes and foreign journalists at this summers Olympics.

"This violent terrorist gang hoped to sabotage the Beijing Olympics by creating an international impact," he said.

  • Turn back the clock to Munich, East Germany 1972, the site of the Olympics. Tragedy strikes the normally peaceful event when "Black September", a terrorist group with ties to Yasser Arafat, took hostage members of the Israeli Olympic team, eventually murdering eleven coaches and athletes along with a German police officer.

  • I think this was an interesting part of the article -

"Sky News foreign affairs correspondent Lisa Holland said there was no way of knowing for sure if there is any truth in the Chinese government's claim.

However, she said it would help distract the international media from the protests along the Olympic torch relay route.

Coverage of demonstrations in London, Paris and San Francisco has thrown the spotlight on China's poor human rights record.

"We can't verify that there was a plot, but it does divert attention from the other issues," Holland said."

  • Jade, just a brief note to correct a mistake: Munich is not, and never was part of East Germany. Munich is the capital of the South-Eastern Land (State) of Bavaria.

Could this possibly be like the Bush Administration's well-timed reports of terrorist plots foiled all across the globe? Hmmmm.

  • But Baveria is part of Germany and was part of Eastern Germany at the time of the cold war.

The kidnapping plot could've been real, or it could've been fake. With the lock down China has on information their word may be the only proof we will get.

  • Bavaria was always part of West Germany - it was NEVER part of East Germany.

  • Weird how they can "kidnap" a monk within there own boarders and this is not deemed terrorism.

  • China: "How can we divert attention away from our control of Tibet?"
"Oooh, I know! Let's make up a story about an attempt to kidnap Olympic athletes, then EVERYONE will feel sorry for us and forget about Tibet! Nobody wants an athlete to get hurt, right?"

    WEAK!

  • Genocide Olympics,

I am disgusted that anyone in the US or not would participate in the Olympics in China. I have just recently learned of Chinas involvement in the Darfur Genocide. If we (America) participate in the Olympics we would be telling China that we are on good terms with them despite their involvement in the mass murder of thousands of innocent people. We would, in effect, be saying bring on the Holocaust!!

I agree with boycott, but not violence. Civil disobedience, people, Civil disobedience

  • relocate the olympics, damn it.
    dahnae
  • Maybe then people would start paying attention

  • China also has apparently nabbed members of muslim groups who are suspected of planning to bomb the games!...

Seems like it might be a good year to skip a trip to the summer olympics, huh?!

  • OK; boycott the Olympics - with which I fully agree - but the next step is to stop using/consuming any product from the u.s. until it realises that it has become the demon it wished to expel.

It's fine and modern to slam the politics of any country with which we have idealogical issues - it's harder to realise that those issues are our own fault given our greed and need.

If you want to criticise China, first start with your own mess of a country (the u.arse.of.a) and once you sort that, then you may have a reason to complain and fight for the rights of others.

It's an old quote but worthwhile:

1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

America: clean your own yard before messing with those of other sovereign nations; you are not the world's police force.

  • The Olympics is not about politics! It is for the athletes of the world. A boycott of the Olympics would be shameful, because the Olympics are suppose to be a week were we can put all politics aside and unite as nations. No matter what china is doing and how we view as Americans view it, we need to keep focused on the big picture. As for Beijing this could be its golden opportunity to view the western media and see what they are missing out on. Even if you are one of those people who believe the Olympics is about politics, use common sense. Since it is about the athletes, the protesting should only be allowed to come from the athletes if they so choose to make a statement.
Also even if we did decide to boycott the games, there is no knowing how it would turn out. This could backfire on the economy considering that china has billions of dollars invested in our economy. If they pull that money out of Dollars and turn it into something else (Euros) the dollar will plummet.

  • How do we even know if what China says it has done is true...how do we know this isn't just a PR story to divert attention away from the Tibet protest. There is plenty of evidence to support Tibet's claims of oppression, but where is the evidence to support what China is telling us about their supposed foiling of this plot to kidnap Olympic athletes?
    Incredulous
  • Opps, after consulting my handy dandy out of date public school history book I see that you're dead on TDyl about Munich.
