I'm with you and Steven Brenova, ajankowski1 and this is precisely why I am attempting to spread my message via my non-violent website.
To others reading I say this: are we REALLY sick and tired of all of this gun violence that we see? I know I am. As an activist for a less violent world, the way I see it is that we have a great deal of work to do in order to reduce all of this gun violence and it's not going to happen unless we take action and take it NOW.
What should we do? well whoever is serious and wants to actually do SOMETHING instead of nothing, the first step on the ladder begins in our very own homes, the second in our classrooms, via non-violence/conflict resolution classes.
We need to educate our children on how to treat one another with respect, understanding and tolerance and we need a complete mindset change as we relate to relying upon guns and for that matter ALL lethal weapons to solve our problems and our differences. We need to replace lethal weapons with less than lethal weapons until guns filter down to where they become merely objects to be found in history books and collections. This is the ONLY way less people will be maimed and/or killed and our future generations will be able to perpetuate this beautiful planet that we so cherish.
If I could re-write the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this is precisely what I would love to see:
"We, the people of the United States, in order that we shall have the right to preserve a State free for all races, shall achieve this end by the use of less-lethal weaponry only for our continued survival as human beings. This free State entails our personal self-defense as well as our right to our food consumption. In keeping with current government law, if we so choose to possess a less-lethal weapon (be it either upon our persons or within our private homes), we are obligated to store these aforementioned weapons plus any ammo relating to its use in a manner which will serve to protect the welfare of a minor child."

badthing:
I'm all for non-violence (except in defense). In my opinion, I have the right to stop anyone attacking me or another innocent. If that attacker could kill the attackee, a person can use lethal force (if that's what it takes to stop the attack, so be it).
If outlawing guns would stop violent crime, I'd support that. Unfortunately, gun laws are often ignored by those intent on harming others...i.e. they are ineffective. That's because criminals break the law and people are always capable of violence. Legally restricting one tool is not going to stop people from criminally harming others. It's like outlawing chainsaws and thinking that no more trees will ever be cut, it just won't happen.
So, we are left with an imperfect solution for our imperfect world. We can allow people to defend themselves with a very effective tool. Outlawing said tool will harm the victims more than the criminals. I don't ever want to have to shoot someone, but I do want the opportunity if someone decides to try to murder me or someone I care about!
A gun is like a fire extinguisher--you never want to have to use it, but if you have to do use it, you'll be glad you had one.

I have an interesting point of view.
You don't trust others with firearms because you don't trust yourself with a firearm. Fear is normally brought on by ignorance. Ignorance is brought on by being raised in a overly sheltered environment.

What you are saying is not what is being proposed by most people.
When people talk about concealed carry on campus, we are talking about people who already have carry permits. These are people who already safely carry at places like churches, supermarkets, and office buildings. It is illogical to think that they would suddenly become irresponsible when they set foot on campus.

Young, immature students with short tempers CANNOT get a Concealed Carry License. As a group, CCLs have a better safety record than the police, and a LOWER arrest record than the police and the general populace.

Um....so why are the police carrying them?
Seriously, think to the next level. You are probably a great HALO player.
CCLs aren't about arming drunk art majors or putting an arsenal in the frat house. You'll never see one but carefully vetted adults will have the CHOICE to be armed. This suppresses criminals according to research done in prison surveys.
Have a great semester, thanks for posting and....play at the next level!
