I'm from East Palo Alto, Ca. Those of you not familiar with the small town, its a smaller version of Oakland, CA.
Where I'm from, guns are used for violent crimes. Guns kill!
After watching the pod on the Knob Creek gun rally, a gentlemen said that without the right to bear arms only robbers and cops would have guns and what would he do to protect himself if someone broke in. I'm so tired of that excuse. Don't you know if someone robs you at gunpoint and you are unarmed, more than likely you'll survive, but if you too brandish a gun, two guns equals a gunfight and someone ain't comin' out alive.
I've lived in a poverty stricken, violence ridden, small town for 20+ years without a gun, and survived. I've been robbed, home invaded, a gun to my head and I made it out alive. What if I had a gun? I probably wouldn't be typing this right now.
Guns kill! period.

if guns kill... and you've been held at gunpoint... how are you still alive then?
emotions.. and emotional responses with no basis in reality, kill more then any weapon... -
You made it out alive because the person was using a gun as a means with which to scare you into cooperating.
You got lucky.
Maybe next time you won't be. -
Hi JrDiNisi, I was more refuting the fact that guns are needed as protection. I definitely see your point. At the same time, emotionally unstable people, wouldn't have the means to make a quick and irrational decision to instantly kill someone if guns weren't readily available. (Unless they were a ninja of course!)
I know its impossible to outlaw guns, I know we will never live in a world without them, even with stricter gun laws they will always be readily available in the wrong hands.
However, condoning them at shows and festivals just feels like we're taking a step in the wrong direction. -
Guns aren't readily available. Many states restrict your Second Amendment rights to the point where what they say is okay to possess is relatively useless.
If guns are so readily available, why is it that I have to pay, wait obscene lengths of time, and take classes to prove to the applicable authorities that I may exercise the rights acknowledged to exist by the Constitution?
Oh, and even if guns were readily available, it's not like there aren't plethoras of other inanimate objects laying around that could potentially be used to injure another person. -
where i'm from, they're readily available!

"where i'm from, they're readily available!"
Yea by criminals who do not follow the laws to begin with and never do because they are criminals! You come from California which has some of the strictest gun laws in the entire country! Let me give you a sample of them:
-Machine guns, short-barrel rifles, short-barrel shotguns, class III guns in general BANNED!!
-so called mislabeled "assault weapons" which are really semi-automatic (not MACHINE GUNS) rifles or shotguns that LOOK like military firearms BANNED!!
-anything above 50 calibre BANNED!!
-barrel shrouds, folding stocks, suppressors, flash suppressors, detachable magazines (more than 10 rounds), thumbhole stocks, pistol grips, so-called "cop-killer" ammo, underfolder stocks BANNED!!
-semi-automatic pistols by 2010 will require microstamping in them (which is a useless technology that doesn't do anything but waste more money) and any that do not have them will be BANNED!!
-every firearm is required to be licensed to the state
-even more strict background checks than at the federal level
-all sales must go through an FFL (a licensed gun dealer) and then licensed by the State of California as in no private transactions allowed
But the fact of the matter is that guns do NOT kill people. People use guns to kill people. Guns shoot projectiles. If you want to get even more technical it is actually the bullet from the gun fired by the human that kills people. If you had a gun you would not have those situations happen to you. Criminals are cowards to begin with and prefer unarmed victims to armed ones. Hence why do you think states with more restricted gun ownership by the law-abiding have higher rates of crime compared to states without it. -
With only 80,000,000 gun owners and over 247,000,000 automobiles in the U.S. ,everyone should be more worried about getting run over.
Cars are more readily available than guns..... fact
how many people do you know that died from firearms?
How many people do you know that have died from auto?
Owning a gun is a right. Auto ownership is a privilege. -
Yes, acorinne8, guns ARE readily available and that's why via my non-violent website, I am doing what I can to spread my message.
Are we REALLY sick and tired of all of this gun violence that we see? I know I am. As an activist for a less violent world, the way I see it is that we have a great deal of work to do in order to reduce all of this gun violence and it's not going to happen unless we take action and take it NOW.
What should we do? well whoever is serious and wants to actually do SOMETHING instead of nothing, the first step on the ladder begins in our very own homes, the second in our classrooms, via non-violence/conflict resolution classes.
We need to educate our children on how to treat one another with respect, understanding and tolerance and we need a complete mindset change as we relate to relying upon guns and for that matter ALL lethal weapons to solve our problems and our differences. We need to replace lethal weapons with less than lethal weapons until guns filter down to where they become merely objects to be found in history books and collections. This is the ONLY way less people will be maimed and/or killed and our future generations will be able to perpetuate this beautiful planet that we so cherish.
If I could re-write the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this is precisely what I would love to see:
"We, the people of the United States, in order that we shall have the right to preserve a State free for all races, shall achieve this end by the use of less-lethal weaponry only for our continued survival as human beings. This free State entails our personal self-defense as well as our right to our food consumption. In keeping with current government law, if we so choose to possess a less-lethal weapon (be it either upon our persons or within our private homes), we are obligated to store these aforementioned weapons plus any ammo relating to its use in a manner which will serve to protect the welfare of a minor child."
