A senior aide to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr was assassinated today in the holy city of Najaf, officials said. Authorities immediately announced a citywide curfew and security forces were seen deploying on the streets.

The killing threatened to raise tensions amid a violent standoff between al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia and the U.S.-backed Iraqi government.

This man was shot and killed outside his home and at least 15 others dead... and we complain about the culture of "thug-life" violence rappers engender here in the States... with what happens there, literally tearing up the streets nearly every day, comparatively, they make our "tough" gang thugs look like a bunch of posturing pansies who think they're "it" just firing off a few small caps.

Anyway that's a really frustrating culture of chronic chronic violence I've never understood over there, being they claim to be so holy and religious. Don't they see the hypocrisy in it and reach for some semblance of integrity and accountability... ever??? Do you have any expertise on this subject or are you just trying to raise awareness jc'?

Can you cast any light on the subject for us?

violence begets violence. The peoples of the world need to finally make a stand and become intolerant to hatred and cruelty. When you look at the middle east you only see random acts of hate- It concerns me that there is a very real possibility that the worst in human nature will always lash out in this area in this way.

  • maybe it's not so much indignant "intolerance" for any one thing we should be considering...perhaps it's just more of the stereotypical idea of "justice" and the assignment of blame that seems to perpetuate ever more violence.

but violence over time does change people, for better and for worse, and it may come as some surprise, as it has to me, that there is a great power and lasting hope in just forgiveness. nothing has made me think of it in better terms than this Current pod.

it's an absolutely *beautiful* piece showing how an actual government is making a real effort at *stopping* civil war, and finding some success, through that very conscious act and power of forgiveness. while all the victims want is peace, not all the "rebels" have made their decision to lay down their weapons and their hatreds, but some DO come out of the bush to take advantage of amnesty if they will but live peaceably anew... there is hope...for some.
