Here are six kickass creatures that evolution apparently decided were just too awesome to exist and then, to add insult to injury, evolved them into the crappiest replacements possible.
The video above is of a descendant of the Hyaenodon gigas, which was the size of a horse, with jaws as long as an alligator's, specially designed to tear away flesh. They had an acute sense of smell unmatched in the prehistoric world and weighed upwards of a quarter of a ton.
They were swift, effective killing machines which roamed in packs and could, as a group, take down anything. Its descendant is the raccoon, pictured here stealing a doormat.

I prefer the ones we've got now, at least they don't kill me unless i eat them... :D

I agree, I prefer cute cuddly and mildy ferocious to smart efficient killing machines anyday.
-
they can still kill us I'd rather die by big than small
-
that raccoon is building himself a nice pad - he'll be stealing the TV next , then raiding the fridge for some beer and will begin the process of de-volving into a couch potato .
-
So...this is what is happening to humans. It explains much.

Funny, I just learned about fainting goats yesterday, and now I stumble on a video of them in action. They're quite peculiar animals I must say.
-
Where have I been? I must have missed the racoon's evolutionary jump! When did they start using doormats?
-
Great music with that video...perfect. Yeah!

Why can't it just be that these creatures went extinct and the animals we know today are just in the same family. What if there was once a really kick ass raccoon?
-
Same thing happened to rabbits...
This is what they used to be like back in the middle ages. -
Actually they didn't just "go extinct." Man, with his awesome hunting powers, was able to compete with these predators so efficiently that they ran out of food and died out. There used to be giant ground sloths and other giant herbivores that these carnivores preyed on, but they all lost out to humans and their pack hunting and weapons. Story of life on Earth.

Uh...Julie? Only Smilidon and Megatherium were around the time of humans. The rest all went extinct before the great apes were even around.
