This is possibly the most important alternative energy source. A carbon-neutral renewable fuel that would require no change from our current infrastructure. One can still drive their car without adding to the overall CO2 content of the atmosphere. We can still use our diesel-powered trains and ships. One can still take a jet around the world.

Yeah, carbon neutrality is a good first step towards decrease of overall greenhouse gases.

this needs to be implemented on a grand scale, FAST. Maybe it wont always be the resource we use, but it seems like a good alternative for right now. doesnt mess with food supply, doesnt release more carbon into the air.

This looks like a dream!
I wonder if there are any drawbacks or prohibitions.-

this seems cool, but i would have questions about it. organic? and if it is(which it clearly is) then although greenhouse wise it might be ok, its going to leave some residue that will collect. maybe small, but you will have it...whats with that? what happens if this algae is introduced into other areas, ponds swamps...etc. what happens if it floods? what happens if birds or animals get in there and transport that stuff? is it naturally occuring or was it created?
does it have a relevant octane level so that a smaller amount goes a longer way? seems a good idea, but whenever people introduce new forms of energy, i think they are looking for an anti oil route just to stick it to the man, and possible lower costs, but all new innovations will always be STUPID EXPENSIVE in the beginning, and second, there is ALWAYS a negative consequence.-

It just occurred to me that the invasive water hyacinth which multiplies and spreads like nobody's business and with which people don't know what to do as it spreads and chokes waterways, ponds, and lakes could also be harvested for biofuel - two birds with one stone, so to speak.

but what happens when this pond dries up? and that algae blows away with the wind? into and over a large area? be like invasion of the body snatchers or something!!

this is incredible. if this is as promising as it sounds then i think it will just be one of the first building blocks for a new technology.
stephenthompson, i agree with you that it does sound like a good alternative for right now, but I really believe that as long as there is oil in the ground, then the world is going to use it. good to start doing research now though because I can't imagine oil being around for many more generations.-

People resist change, and since our economy is supply and demand, individuals who want a certain car that is not capable of using this new fuel source will stick to what they want. It would take decades to remove all the cars that use traditional gas and replace them with eco-friendly cars. Look what happened to the electric car. Supply and demand dictates that what the people want- they get. Almost all of the major gas companies would have to have this fuel on hand, but if there are only a handful of these cars on the roads they would be spending money on something they might never sell. Have you ever tried to find a station that has ethanol fuel on hand- they are few and far between. This is a great find, but as of yet the ability to place eco-friendly vehicles on the roads is a very slow process.

honestly, there is a simple way to preserve oil. and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and i said this before. make it manditory for all buildings taller than 6 stories to install solar panels of at least 20'x20 of area. at least that is, but hopefully more. give companies 3 years to comply with no exceptions. give them incentives that render the installation neutral to tax responsibility.
then install Solar panal fields of at least 1 mile x i mile, but hopefully larger and more of them.
then, take after the brazilians and make large farms and refineries run off of solar and bio fuels. ONLY! there are brazilian farms and factories that run off of what they produce.
the big problem i think is that people dont think that there can be multiple forms of energy. and different industries can and should use them. buildings and factories as well as most houses should use solar power...and less coal. maybe coal in winter months. northern midwestern states coal longer obviously. north east should use more nuclear and solar, and less coal. south west could exist purely off solar. and western states a combo of wind due to the jet stream and solar. then cars are split between bio/diesel/gas.
long haul trucks use bio trains use diesal and solar. smaller cars gas but with better economies.
easy fix people.-

What, what, what?

Last August as I was passing through Canada, it was announced that a commercial nuclear reactor had to be shut down (Ottawa?). Algae had grown in the lake and was clogging up the intake pipes. Apparently, this was not the first time it had happened. They blamed it on excessively warm weather (i.e. global warming). HORRAY FOR ALGAE! I just had to smile....

the algae came in and said...DAY TUKK ARR JUBZZZ!!

Neurozool: Right now you can convert your gas engine to a E-85 or 100% alcohol for $100.00. Also all diesel engines right now can use 100% biodiesel depending on the temperature. Even in the cold, you can install a heater to keep the fuel flowing. The petroleum industry just doesn't want anyone to know. So you don't have to wait to buy a new vehicle. You might have to change the hoses on the diesel fuel lines in the future.

I think it's better than driving up the price of corn for corn oil but ethanol is not the answer. It'll help short-term yes but short-term becomes long-term all to fast. My support's behind the Hydrogen Fuel Cell.
-
I've read about this I'm glad the idea is finally being used. This is much much better than using corn for fuel.

fart engine. just drink orange juice and wait.....fart into your seat and let it warm up your engine......it will stink but at least you wont run out of gas!!!!!!!
