"It is estimated that by the year 2050 three out of four people in the world will be living in urban agglomerations - up from one out of two presently. Between now and then the world's human population is projected to grow from the current 5.7 billion to 10.5 billion. The urban infrastructure of many of the world's largest cities is already stretched to or beyond the breaking point and the pressures continue to mount. By all accounts we are headed for collective disaster.
According to Dr. Wally N'Dow, the Secretary General of the UN Habitat Summit II to be held in Istanbul, Turkey 2-14 June 1996, the goal of the summit is to engage policy makers, planners, city administrators, and citizens everywhere in building sustainable habitats for the future. It is an important and timely goal. The crisis of the world's cities and towns is deepening so rapidly that this conference may be our last opportunity to build global consensus on necessary corrective actions before the damage becomes irreversible".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agglomeration
''In the study of human settlements, an agglomeration is an extended city or town area comprising the built-up area of a central place (usually a municipality) and any suburbs linked by continuous urban area. In France, INSEE the French Statistical Institute, translate it as "Unité urbaine" which means continuous urbanized area. However, because of differences in definitions of what does and does not constitute an "agglomeration", as well as variations and limitations in statistical or geographical methodology, it can be problematic to compare different agglomerations around the world. It may not be clear, for instance, whether an area should be considered to be a satellite and part of an agglomeration, or a distinct entity in itself.
The term "agglomeration" can also be linked to "Conurbation," which is a more specific term for large urban clusters where the built-up zones of influence of distinct cities or towns are connected by continuous built-up development (Essen - Dortmund and others in the Rhine-Ruhr district), even in different regions, states or countries, Lille - Kortrijk in France and Belgium). Each city or town in a conurbation may nevertheless continue to act as an independent''-

Mobius this is such an important subject I am glad that you brought it up.
I have been checking out this book called "Collapse" by Jared Diamond. It is about the reasons; political, socio economic, religious, climate, and production of food that lead to the collapse of Empires. We are living in a world of economic empires that are on the verge of collapse. This Diamond argues is inevitable.
For example, look at really how quickly the Soviet Union disintegrated once it had reached a critical mass. The same is going to happen for the Western Empire. it is going to collapse and there will be chaos that will follow, but what will come out of the chaos is anyone's guess. People across the globe are strategizing to meet this challenge but resources are slim to none.
My hope is that regional anarchies will arise to fill the gap of leadership and will embrace sustainable solutions in reaction to the severe, and I mean really severe economic devastation that will be present.
I wouldn't be surprised if things get as bad as they did in Nazi Germany when wheelbarrows full of cash were needed just to buy a few items at the grocery store. The day may even come when many places will cease to honor dollar bills in favor of other foreign currencies.
The people who will fare best of course will be those who live in more rural communities. These communities will undoubtedly have their own militias to protect their communities from the ravaging bands of hungry homeless that will begin their exodus from the big cities as food supplies become scare and riots plentiful.
