The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) released it's updated map of gay rights. The new data reports 7 countries that use the death penalty to prosecute homosexuals. Countries that issue the death penalty for acts of homosexuality include Iran, Sudan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Mauritania. 76 countries imprison homosexuals for anywhere from 1 year to life.
Only 19 countries recognize homosexual unions through marriage or civil unions.
The map is color coded based on the level of protection offered in a given country. The map of the United States is mostly gray (meaning there is no specific legislation for or against LGBTs). There are small circles of color representing state or municipalities that do provide protections in the United States.
The ILGA will release a full length report on state promoted homophobia on May 17.

Chile is grey, no surprise there.
Homosexuality is one of the many things we, as a society, don't talk about here. -
I was wondering why my instincts kept telling me that i eventually wanted to move either to Canada or to Spain, and now I know why, they both have protections for LGBT as well as offer full marital equality.
Hey South Africa looks cool too, but its so far away from every body else...just kidding. South Africa is pretty progressive if you ask me.
Thanks for the map. -
Wow. There is way too much blue and purple on that map.
-
crazy... love it.

It's interesting to see how progressive the rest of the world is. And there a few suprises too: Poland, Ecuador, Mexico!
It's nice to see that homosexuality has made its way out of the closet.-

When will there by a map of how children are treated? Where it is safest to be conceived, born, grow up and live? Where can you, as a child, not have to worry about incest, sexual mutilation, molestation, slavery, disease, and poverty? Is this not a more worthy issue then where as adults you can live? Children are our responsibility- they have no defence but us.

Sigh... let the Canadian jokes loose.
-
Really interesting map. Thanks for that. It will be a great day when all of the US is yellow and red...or at least orange.

It seems to me that it's Asia that's lagging behind the most, probably because they a) have hundreds of years of history and tradition to keep to, and/or b) they want to "protect their image".
I just hope people will learn to get over it, even if what gays do does seem unnatural. -
just give civil unions the same tax breaks as married couples and this whole thing shouldn't be an issue. anyone wanting a marriage for other reasons has some hypocritical issues to deal with
-
Woot! Go Canada! We love gays/lesbians... Living here is like watching Will & Grace 24/7 (PLEASE HELP US!) lol... jk. It's good to see Canada on the cutting edge of Human Rights. First Gay/Lesbian marriages... next, removing that silly law against marijuana.

Great post. It's good to see the UK is more progressive than most of the world but I'd prefer to see gay people allowed to marry rather than have an equivalent partnership. There should be no difference.

Do you think that what gays do is unnatural? This seems to be what you are saying.
Is it the anal sex or the oral sex or the kissing and cuddling that you find unnatural? Is it the fact that two people of the same sex love each other, or that they may perhaps want to spend their whole lives together that you find unnatural?
What informs your world view to make such a judgment about what is natural and what is not?
Where you present when the world was coming into existence and evolution was moving forward through procreation and natural selection?
Couldn't homosexuality be the next step in human evolution because we have reached a critical mass in population? Not every human being can procreate otherwise we would be doubling the population of the world every 20 years.
Homosexuality is a natural form of population control. -
There was a law proposed here in Washington state that said roughly, "if a marriage doesn't produce a child in the first 3 years of marriage then it is nullified" So apparently not wanting children makes you gay.
Nice to see Spain so progressive, and Ireland on the way, Woot for my ethnic background! USA get off yer ass!-
