Who has controlled the Middle East over the course of history? Pretty much everyone. Egyptians, Turks, Jews, Romans, Arabs, Persians, Europeans...the list goes on. Who will control the Middle East today? That is a much bigger question.

  • The thing this timeline really shows is the constant warfare in the region. It's no wonder so many Middle Easterners have jumped off the deep end.

  • Why do people have to expand onto anothers land? I simply don't understand greed.
  • well done presentation. hopefully they can peacefully coexist with their neighbor states.

why marilynn? depends on your theories of human behavior. territory means power, more crops, slaves, money, resources etc. now a days, oil. humans are mostly driven by the desire to succeed and since the world tells people success is power and money, well, thats what they go for.

  • I wonder, how much is enough?
  • Vierotchka, this is quite fascinating and informative. I found that there were three empires I had never even heard of and now I have been looking them up on the internet.

The one that doesn't seem to have much info on it is the Beljuk Empire, I could only find three citations and those referred to them as a Turkish empire. Do you know anything about that?

Thank you so much. This along with the book I have been reading called "Collapse" by Jared Diamond really explains a lot. His book is about the reasons why Empires rise and fall.

Now that i have seen this Flash presentation I realize that there were many factors that played into the rise and fall of so many empires.

  • The Middle East will be no less a focal point for control of the world since so big a part of the world's accessible oil reserves lie underneath those lands. Control of this portion of the world is number one on the geo-political "to do" list for many nations and strategic alliances.

Thank you, Vierotchka, for the graphic showing the farthest reaches of those who have controlled those lands in the past.

Control of the Middle East is a huge part of the planning of what many refer to as the NWO or New World Order.

  • unreal...so many people want that area. Today its for the oil money. I think thats the end tho, what else is there???

  • What else? The "Holy Centers" of the monotheistic religions which control the minds of half of humanity - that's power, baby!

  • Awesome presentation.

I knew of the the civs and the order they ruled the Middle East, but I'd not seen it presented so cleanly as this.

(Man, the Europeans really screwed up a lot of things when they drew lines in the sand after WWI...)

    Cool post.

  • Great presentation! Interesting how those lands have been a point of war and interest for centuries. That helps to briefly understand the shaping of ideals of the people.

  • Wasn't the Bush empire in there someplace? Oh wait! Arab Emirates , Bush Family, same thing right?

  • Nice presentation! They forgot the Akkadians though - arguably the world's first empire.

As to Marilynn, it's not always about greed but lack of resources that compells one group to expand into more fertile areas.

  • This land has been fought over since the begining of time. Before oil, it was esential in that it was the only land conection into Egypt, and Africa. We must have a foothold in the madness that is the middle east, thankfully, Iraq gave us that chance.

  • Samurai , greed , resources whats the dif. ?

  • And now as for centuries before, they fight over water. Great post.

  • HHHMMM ! GOT WATER!

  • ohplease, what's the difference? Set down your latte and think for two seconds - greed is wanting more than you already have. Lack of resources is a motivation of desperation and need.
