There is revolution going on in waste management which Big Brother would be proud of.

Tucked away under the rim of wheelie bins found in two Sydney councils are small radio frequency tracking devices collecting information on a household's waste habits...

  • I heard rumours that they were doing this in England as well.

I wonder how they can tell what type of rubbish is being thrown in the bin though?

  • They have been tetsing this out in the UK as well. I don't thnk it's to see what you throw away, but how much, to track a wheelie bin to a particular household - this way council can charge people extra for throwing away things.

I wonder how this works with flats? There are 4-6 massive bins outside my block you chuck your bin bags in, and a couple of recycling bins.

What's to stop someone who throws away a lot of things switching their tracking device with someone who throws away very little (Or just putting their rubbish in someone elses bin)?

I could see this leading to an increase in fly tipping...

  • At my parents village in Germany they also want to track how much garbage everybody is producing, though it would be monitored by the weight of the rubbish bin only. And then people would be chrged according to the weight and amount of rubbish they produce. The rubbish bin then have one of the barcodes on - each household gets a particular barcode on its rubbish bin and they are automatically collected and recorded when emptied. last time I was there, I already started filming about this issue as I found the automatic bin collecting mechanism with automatic arms and similar really funny.
