Located 20 meters (65 ft) underground, the 1,480 square meter (16,000 sq ft) space contains emergency supplies to be distributed to the public in the event of a major earthquake. Items include 5,000 blankets, 8,000 rugs, 4,000 candles, 300 cooking pots, 200 t-shirts, and emergency medical supplies. A conveyor belt system is installed to help transport the supplies up to street level.

The underground warehouse is connected to an unnamed station on the Oedo line, Tokyo’s deepest subway. Apparently, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government maintains more than one of these warehouses, but the locations are kept secret.

  • Seems like a good idea but 8000 rugs seems a bit odd.

  • you mite need a rug if you where having a bad-hairday ! which is likely if you've just suffered a major earthquake. to-pay !

People that live in Manchester often prepare for bad weather by purchasing umbrellas... How freaky !

  • ....why they've used such a secret hiding place for it I don't know!

  • Well it's not really that secret considering it's much easier to access from the Oedo Subway line (not too sure which station). The news channel could have just as easily opened a door from inside the subway station (a new one which was built very far underground) but the news segment would have lost its dramatic effect. The stairway up to the street is more like an 'alternate exit' rather than a 'secret entrance.'

One could quite easily call a locker in an underground subway line a 'secret underground lair' now couldn't they, eh.

  • this is cool. I wish NYC would take some money out of their pockets and invest in their citizens like this.

  • It's secret because It'd probably get co-opted by blackmarketeers otherwise like what happened at the end of WWII. Black marketeers discovered warehouse supplies of a ghost army that was suppose to be mobolized to fight off the expected invasion (but the A-bombs took care of that).

  • 5,000 blankets, 8,000 rugs, 4,000 candles, 300 cooking pots, 200 t-shirts don't seem like quite enough for the 12 million people in Tokyo. I'm sure all this is reserved for high ranking military and government officials.

  • ivxx - you are spot on!

The yakuza probably funded this whole project and went to lengths to ensure there wouldn't be enough for everyone. That way they can make tonnes of cash selling water and other supplies like they did after the big Kobe earthquake in 1995.

  • Just wondering if in case of such a mojor earthquake the electricity is still going, as well as the underground and the conveyor belt used to access the centres.
