why do people do this? Not asif the poor thing was doing any wrong.
I'll look for this brut. No doubt about it. -
So...you corner a cougar, and then you're surprised when it attacks you? Am I missing something?
-
This probably isn't the only cougar to go down in the back alley of a Chicago suburb.
ZING!-

I know, how can you be so suprised when it attacks you? They scared the poor thing, it TRIED to avoid them and they took abuse of that.

This is nuts, I’m from Iowa and I remember the DNR bringing cougars from Colorado and releasing them in Iowa’s countryside to help control the Deer population. Having seen these animals run across my own back yard I knew it was only a matter of time before they made their way into the major cities. Sadly I doubt the officers in Chicago have very much, if any training when it comes to dealing with wild animals other than deer.

What the hell !!!
why would anybody corner and shoot a poor little Cougar for no certain reason? it was just wandering around not harming anything. or anybody. they could of shot it with a tranquilizer dart and relocated it. : (
yes, there may be the risk of it being either rabid or really angry and just flipping out on someone, but honestly? i thought we were EVOLVING as a world, not DEVOLVING. the cougar was only passing through! it was doing NO ONE any harm. have a heart, people!!!!!-

This breaks my heart - they are such beautiful animals. Where was animal control with tranquizer darts? Did they really have to shoot to kill?
-
Being from Colorado, I have learned a lot about these animals for my own safety. They are beautiful creatures that live in harmony with their natural environment. However, they do pose a significant threat to small children. They rarely attack humans, but they are wild animals and may pursue any pray that they can handle. I don’t know what any of you expected the Chicago police to do. I doubt that the Chicago PD has sufficient training to deal with such a case. The police did what they had to do to maintain public safety. A 150 pound cougar is no stray dog or pussy cat.
-
Here is another way of looking at it....27 chicago school children shot dead to one stray innocent cougar within a month that means....One dead student per day vs. one dead cougar every month...think the chances look pretty good for the cougar! Let's make it an even 30! Shall we kids?

jaystx, I see where you'recoming from, what a stupid idea to release them there, however, NO excuse. Not thecougarsfault, how about imagineing the poor cougars eyes through life:
You're dominant. ou're away from danger. You're in theright adaptations. Youlove your fear-free lifestyle where you are. You get kidnapped by people, and wake up in awierd place, there's tall things (fences) tha, by a natuarl instinct, are threas, people stand on thier hind legs, that's what other animals did when they wanted to fight, they're all over the place, you're frighened, you just want to get away and find homebut you don't know how.
Think about it, don't blam/harmthe animal, it's people. -
you're local over there. Why don't you two deal with the local council? Makes sense.
-
thank you jaystyx, for shedding light on what was a dangerous situation as far as the police and residents were concerned.
it's a shame that the animal was put down, but the reasons for the animal being there are a much larger issue. one that falls on all of us because of the way we all live and the resources we take from nature.
yes, it was not the animal's fault, but they are difficult to tranq, are large enough to do serious damage to an adult, not to mention a child and i doubt that anyone posting here could've done anything other than what was done to prevent human injury. -
I agree with the minority here, sad to say; beautiful and majestic as they are, cougars are indeed wild animals, and do definitely kill adult human beings, not to mention children - usually by ambushing them from behind and sinking their teeth into the back of the neck.
Joggers get it relatively often in wooded areas.
They are not to be trifled with, and should not be considered "cute liwwle cuugrzz" if you are dealing with one in a highly populated area, unless you have the proper training and tools to deal with them non-lethally, which these cops didn't.
I'd be the first one to say there are waytoomanyfucking human beings in the world, but these cops were just doing their job. I wouldn't assume they enjoyed it. -
I am a Chicago resident living not too far from where the Cougar incident took place. Now, I am not an avid animal rights activist nor am I part of any Cougar protection agency, but I do think that killing this animal was wrong. This cougar was spotted at 9 o'clock in the morning and was shot at 5:30pm. I know that this cougar is a wild animal and could be dangerous, but there was plenty of time to get animal control or someone from the zoo who knows these kinds of animals and subdue it. Last year there was a coyote that ran into a convenient store and hid in the cooler in the front of the store. Animal control arrived and captured the coyote and released it back into the wild. That story has a much happier ending. I am not sure what I would do if I were in that situation and if this cougar had maimed or killed someone I may think differently. The fact of the matter is that the police had plenty of time to act accordingly and they chose to kill this animal instead.

where were the tranquilizers??
unless the cougar was a threat, it should not have been killed.-

I am not sure if they had tranquillizers, but they surely did not use them.

i mean it's just not right for "people" not us, but other people who think that hurting or killing animals is ... "fun" for some weirdos, or just a way of getting rid of them. but still Cougars/any type of animal are just as important to our society as we are. and killing that poor Cougar, was just showing us how selfish those police man were. It's almost like they think they were going to get some type of pride from people. PSH .... i don't think so

yes i'm sure that the cops did not enjoy such a task. But..... their was an other way to deal with this problem. The cops could of shot the cougar with tranquilizer darts. and Still i'm wondering. when wild animals are wandering around public areas don't the cops have to call the animal control before they do anything to the animal? i don't know but i wish that was the case for this poor Cougar. I mean granted he could of hurt some Adult or little child by sneaking up on them and plunging their big teeth into their necks but, this cougar wasn't so their was really no Right to kill he poor thing. it would have been a lot better off being put back to where it came from. I mean i'm sure that that Cougar was so scared out in the public like that. being screamed at and cornered and than shot for no FREAKING reason ? "sigh" i don't know what to say. it's just all wrong.

This reminds me of many cases. One of the most related was when a coagar was shoot in Arazona, near the city of Pheonix. It was originally already fearful of humans and him and the other cougars kept well away from the towns out of fear, but then after the shooting, all the other cougars were more fearful, but in the violent form.
AFTER some swine shoot him, those left over then started to become handfuls to aggressive andwould kill aperson if they had too, not taking chances to be the next.
So, DON'Tshoot them, it's NO improvement people.
