Wow some of these chicks need to eat! Maybe this law will help.
-
Looking at the pictures of those women makes it clear this law is needed. Thin is one thing, but those women are emaciated. How on earth can anyone think that's beautiful or fashionable? The fashion industry doesn't want women wearing their cloths, they want walking hangers and it's about time someone put a stop to that.
-
That picture is frightening, I'm glad to hear France has taken action, hopefully many other countries (Hello U.S.!) will follow suit.

While I am not a fan of government bodies telling people how they should look, in this case it could save the lives of some of these models and girls aspiring to be models. Case in point, check out this article on the 5'7" 21 year old Brazilian model weighing 88 pounds who died as a result of complications due to weight.
It is sad to think of all the people who read fashion magazines or are exposed to this in any other way. It is hard not to make the connection that being this thin is what is considered beautiful when that is what a large percentage of main stream media is showing. While I am not naive enough to think the push for these types of laws is going to change the model image from anything less then ultra-thin, it would be nice to see them with a BMI that supports life.-

Though I agree it is terrible to see these emaciated women as objects of 'beauty' and just wish healthy, happy and successful women with real concerns- not just how skinny they are- were the idols of today; that picture is doctored, you can find the original and (others) here:
http://www.snopes.com/photos/people/models.asp
Worse still I find, is that anorexics use these [doctored] images, which are totally the work of photoshop, as goals. Its really quite sad. -

I've recently downloaded Daz Studio 3D, and have been exploring some of the morph features of the Poser characters for sale, the different morphs they offer, and was shocked to discover that some of them include "emaciated" - this caters to the morbid anorexic fashion that more and more young girls are embracing, allowing them to create skeletal figures as if they had esthetic values, which only exacerbates the anorexia problem.

In the words of my husband, and I quote "it'll be like shagging a bag of bones" unquote
-
i like your husband callie2. its honestly disgusting. theres in shape, fit, thin, even tiny. but by nature. this is too artificial and really not attractive
-
starving yourself is not good for the brain either, so i'm guessing she's not all that smart. another turn-off.

I think this proposition is definitely a step in the right direction, but from the sound of the article, it seems like the law as it is will be too vague to make any real difference. After all, it doesn't even define what would constitute "extreme thinness". Without some kind of specific guideline, it's pretty much unenforceable.

This is absolutely crazy.. A person who is trying to look appealing but in actuality they are not. Look in the mirror. When something is not working change it.
-
that picture better be photoshopped

it's just not sexy.

Some people like getting their ears pierced, while others find it gross. As much as I disagree with the idea of starving yourself just for "beauty". Some people like showing off their ribs, while others find it gross.
-
This proposed law is completely idiotic. Ever heard of free speech? Is that a principle that anyone thinks is important?
When are people going to realize that we can't simply legislate away all of society's problems? Instead, try education, personal responsibility, parenting, common sense, self-respect...or maybe just minding your own business! -
just sayin'...

nothing says "i'm so cool that , though i am beautiful , i refuse to subscribe to any concept of beauty at all - in fact , i'm so over 'beauty' that i will look as dead as possible . " ... "beauty" is superficial - and the $2,000 haute couture dresses (shrouds) draped over these girls are meant to be ironic - dressing up death and making it catwalk - the implication being that only the rich ( and superficial ) can afford to be so fashionably ironic - which is ironic itself , and hence so wonderfully clever a thing that just attending a show where this masterpiece of irony is showcased puts one into a special category of cool wherein one is so rich one can afford the luxury of turning "conspicuous consumption " ( the symbol for "rich" ) upside down and making death itself look "expensive" - and conspicuously so . ( begins to bore himself with amateur Barthes-ian cultural critique )
-
It's so nice to hear that people aren't emphasizing weight-loss. Our image-obsessed culture has ruined many lives and self-images in the hopes to make some sales.
-
Wow. I don't know what's scarier ... this, or the obesity epidemic.
-
I think they both fall under a pretty scary phenomenon,
a postmodern human's incapacity for listening to the inner voice of common sense.-

Given France's iconic position in the fashion industry, this seems like a step in the right direction... I just wonder if it will stick.

I agree stephen thomson.
I feel attractive when i'm fit and energetic- i don't think starving oneself results in energy or strength, and neither does over eating. -
Now if only they can make some sort of law that would prevent people unwillingly looking like they're starving. I call the people, who resemble models, but with worse clothes, starving people.

What a horrible image, especially when young girls look at such ads and feel 'fat'. Something has to be done, but more and more laws that can't really be enforced may not be the answer.
-
This is the worst photoshop edit I've ever seen. Look at the edges of her arm, and the lower right side of her dress. Also, her ribs look suspicious, like her skin has been pushed to the left (it's bunched up on the left side of each rib). Badbadbad.
All crappy photoshopping aside, size zero models aren't so hot... -
this lay is seriously gonna help those girls, it makes me sick/sad that they would actually let themselves become like that. i know alot of skinny people (including myself, but i'm NOT WHERE NEAR that 'skinny') and i'm actually one of the 'insane' girls that WANT to GAIN weight. but getting off subject. those girls seriously need counsling or something.

crazy that designers think this will sell their items. they do look like walking coathangers, which is just not attractive.

It's sad how some girls would go to the extent of actually starving themselves to "look good". Sure, everyone likes a great body image, but your rib cage showing can't be anywhere near healthy...or pretty if you ask me.
Models should just get over the fact that everyone has impurities, everyone has something they don't like about their body. Some fat here and there can actually look good on a human too.-

Anorexia is not just about being skinny. its a psychological disorder. sometimes its about being in control or from OCD.
In the fashion world its a different story, its about being skinny and appealing to what they believe is beautiful. But I dont want people to wrongly associate it merely with fashion and beauty. -
there a few major flaws with this. how would you possibly enforce it? arrest somebody and force feed them? also, what kind of punishment could you possibly serve and be justified. I dont agree with people starving themselves and I dont find those incredibly skinny women attractive but this is just a bad way of going about the issue.
-
I think that this is a good step towards achieving some positive change in how "beauty" is perceived. It's like saying: "Hey.... The thinner is NOT the better! There is actually a limit!" Of course it is not easy, and of course the whole issue will have to mature a lot before a final solution will be found, but at least a step is being made. In my opinion a step in the right direction.

They are as sick as sick, or sicker than obese people.
-
This is really sad to see because there are people in our world that HAVE to look this way because they do not have food or money. It's sick that they have to emulate such a horible aspect in our world, hunger. Good work to then to try and legislate something like this, even though it may be restricting to some people, it may save lives.

no, no, no, no, no. it is NOT the government's job to pass laws like this. this law is terrible, unenforceable, overly broad, overly simplistic, invasive, and wrong. if they want to starve themselves to death, then let their families, friends, or private organizations intervene. we might as well outlaw McDonald's, and then we should ban televisions and cellphones, alcohol, cigarettes, deep fryers, pornography, gambling and everything else which could potential cause some form of harm to you. no law like this should ever be passed.

These photos are Photoshopped. You (CurrentTV) should state thate they are digitally altered in the Current News story, or if you didn't know, perhaps now would be a good time to tell everyone, as they are apparently not reading the 4th post to this pod, which gives the website where the original, un-altered photos are. Just to reiterate, it is: http://www.snopes.com/photos/people/models.asp
I think Current TV made a mistake in playing this pod without mentioning that it was digitally altered - By reading the responses here, I can tell that most people think they were not altered. Please be a little more responsible with future news stories. The models here are skinny, but look to other sources to see anorexic, skeletal photos and videos - they do exist.
