U.S. Catholics give high marks to Pope Benedict XVI and they're more satisfied with their bishops than four years ago, but they're still drifting from church teachings and practices, a study released Sunday shows.
On the eve of Benedict's first papal trip here, 82% of U.S. Catholics say they are satisfied with his leadership, according the study, which was conducted by the church's research arm in the USA.

Esteem for bishops rose to 72%, up from a low of 53% in May 2002, when the question was first asked. The clergy sexual abuse scandal, when many Catholics felt bishops had failed to protect children, exploded in January 2002. Bishops had their highest rating, 74%, in 2005 when Benedict was elected.

Even so, only 43% of Catholics say they look to church teachings, the pope and their bishops "in deciding what is morally acceptable," according to the study, Sacraments Today: Belief and Practice among U.S. Catholics.

  • I wonder how people can be happy with a church that openly practices sexism. Why won't it allow women to become priests? Why won't it allow priests to marry? Why do they think they can control what a woman does with her body? Could there be animosity towards women because they truly are hiding something about the life of Christ and the Sacred Feminine? That he was indeed married to Mary Magdalene and was to make her head of the church as the Gnostic Gospels suggest? How can a church that preaches Christianity and compassion exclude women as it does?

  • Well 85% are 'satisfied w/ the Pope' less than something like 15% have any idea what he does so that number is actually moot. Like asking people if they like chocolate and they never had any, just looked at it…. LOL... Mono theist religion is the danger in this world… How much blood needs to be let in all these saviors’ names???
This visit should be interesting as I am understanding the Vatican gave Benedict a
‘personality makeover’, oh great a worldly man of god needs to be coached on how not to come off like an ass. Well it must be what he is. I hope he can give us a further update on the 7 deadly sins, and other apparently erroneously documented crap in his Bible…LOL the Pope, who the f*ck could care!!!

  • I agree. Much blood on the hands of the church.

  • When the hell are they gonna stop? They are still washing and wallowing in the blood and suffering of humanity to justify their existence!

OK now I'm going, why is the main symbol so negative, a device of capitol punishment, and for Catholics you get the tortured figure nailed to it too, what a bonus...

And does anyone else see any thing militant about sitting and listening, then repeating, then singing, all together… Can you say manipulation and control???

  • As a born and bred Catholic that went to church every Sunday till my teens my opinion of the religion is it's a medieval death cult that worships suffering and pain. It's anti-sex, anti-life and sexist and it's ultimate goal seems to be to kill us all through over populaton. This would suit it fine as the more misery, stupidity and suffering there is then the more potential catholic converts they have.

It's murdered millions in the most atrocious ways imaginable often for obsure beliefs it once defended as the absolute truth such as the world being the center of the universe and flat (so much for the infallibility of the pope). How can any intelligent person just take the rest of it's nonsense on 'faith' based on it's past record? It's one of a few major religions based on pure dogma that gives no real tools of liberation in this life - just a promise for some happiness in an after world we should take on faith.

Personally I'm surprised it just a 'drift' away - I would have thought it would have been a mass exodus by now.
