In recent years, there has been a growing subculture of people outside of Asia who are completely obsessed with all things Japanese. This pod takes an in-depth look at young group of Americans, from a variety of backgrounds, who are obsessed with J-Rock (Japanese Rock) and/or Cosplaying (the act of dressing up like characters from animes). We aim to answer the age-old question: WHY are so many people obsessed with Japanese pop culture?

Nicely done pod! When I left for Japan I wasn't aware of such J-Pop popularity in the States besides the small group of anime fans of Dragonball Z and Akira. Now especially after Gwen Stefani's little dip into it, J-Pop has exploded.
What's funny is some of the changes in the J-pop scene at Harajuku. Several years ago, goth lolita types of harajuku were very photo-friendly and always ready to strike a pose. Now a new crop has come in who act sometimes act like celebrities slightly annoyed by the paparazzi ie photographers.-

How Awesome!
As a new AARP Member, I am thrilled to know that I can find a new younger character to become and hit the J-Rock scene! -
Uh-oh ... this subject is sure to make me throw away any critical thought and say ...
Anime: Rurouni Kenshin
Music: Judy and Mary
Film: Battle Royale

I admit it: I love all that stuff. Anima, J-rock, Cosplaying, even down to pocky sticks. I just can't get enough of it.

i like how that one girl with the white tshirt is eating a brownie during the interview.
damn it girl! put down the pastry, for like a minute! -
I can remember a time in my life when I didn't have any crushes on real guys, only guys in anime. I studied every detail of Sailormoon. I worshipped seiyuu. I crushed on Gackt. I've made 20+ cosplay costumes, and that's not even a lot in the anime community. I don't so much admire the escapism of it, but the devotion and passion is definitely out-of-this-world. I hope that these people apply what they learn from it outside of the fantasy of Japanese culture to them.
I was introduced to Japanese and it's culture at a somewhat young age, but I always find out new and interesting things. I was considering going to a convention for my birthday, but I don't even know if I'd enjoy it anymore. I burned myself out.-

I liked this pod. I tried not to but I did. I knew nothing of this strange subculture so it was illuminating. I just go nuts at how some people speak. English is really getting bashed around these days. I wonder how many times these youngsters said "like". Also, I notice that many people these days, particularly here in the States, say "is" when they should say "are" and why do people say "very unique"? What the hell does that mean?
This was a quite delightful pod, however. Made me smile thinking of all the fun these folks were having. Language is a tool. I just wish people learned to use it right.
Sorry for being so grumpy about this. I just find poor language use exhausting.
Time to sleep. Good night.-

I have a friend who has fallen pray to this!! Nice job.

A true expert on Japanese pop. The pod feels a tad long and it might be better to split the cosplay and the music into two short pods. The interviews are great cause it adds to the discussion.
-
Paultreacy-Muahaha! Our work is (or should I say 'are'? :P) done!
Having approached this topic without much background knowledge, my fellow filmmakers and I had a fun time making it, and we learned a lot about these various subcultures. I'm glad that this has come across to those of you who've watched our pod.-
